My thanks to all of you who responded(including Axle).

This morning I went to see a mate of mine at his workplace. In his private time he has a small wrecking yard so he should have an inkling I thought :-).

The problem was staring me in the face. The bar which connects the door latch to the lock mechanism runs through a split sleeve which is clamped on to the side of the inside door skin. The bottom of this sleeve has broken off and so there isn't sufficient tension to move the lock mechanism. A Tek Screw in the right place has solved the problem.

Cheers

I suspected that the rod/sleeve assembly might be the problem but I couldn't find my old GQ manual to confirm it so I kept my gob shut... LOL.

Good to hear its now fixed.

Willem,

In the olden days one could fix almost anything with a length of No 8 fencing wire, fencing pliers and a mulga stick or two.

Nowadays it is Tek screws and cable ties, although the fencing wire still comes in handy at times.

Amazing what a bit of lateral thinking can achieve when one is stuck.

Cheers

Disco.

I'll be honest Willem I didn't have a clue how to fix it. But I did sympathise.

Glad you got it fixed. Just keep those Tek screws away from your tyres.
