In my opinion, yes it's worthwhile. The cave itself is a bit disappointing, and unless you have read the story you will not get a lot out of just seeing the cave. But the views around that area are worth the trip alone.

lovely country and part of our heritage.........forget the permit crap......this is Australia.... go see ....respect all..... and enjoy.

and now I guess all the indignation will start...well so be it..........I have travelled widely through many permit areas and will continue to do so..........

I respect OUR country..the people (regardless of race) and will continue to do so...........but I have yet to use the permit system.......I simply cannot relate to the one sided system

i enquired the other day about obtaining a permit and was told "sightseers" usually dont get one,its only travellers heading east or west that are granted one...he advised me to nominate myself as a traveller heading west LOL...this was the info office at yulara..on parting company with him he said "Just make sure youve got a 4wd"....leave that to your own imagination..
i'll apply for one and see how we go,it will make a good keepsake to our trip..cheers.. rod

Well said bungarra, I agree 100% we are all Australians and should be free to travel anywhere we wish. Regards Nav.

Over there last year (Docker River) and spent two weeks in the area. Need a permit and not supposed to go off the main roads.
Road in can be very corugated, depends when the grader went through.
Luckily had Parks ranger with us and he talked them into allowing us two elders as guides." A study on the Calice virus so he said"
They showed us some great country and permanent water plus the rabbit warrens. The cave worth a look, makes you realise he had it pretty tough. Should have stayed he would have lived a bit longer!
There is a good camp ground just out of town with showers and toilets.
Giles weather station is worth a look too being as you're over that way.
Enjoy
Cheers Paul

We went to the cave at the end of June this year.

Hope you can map read. Turnoff was not marked.

The road out from the Olga's was very sandy and corrugated but I believe to have any appreciation of the story / feat you have to go to such places (dig tree the same applies)

The cave is before Docker River on the left

Hi Rod,
Like the above, well worth the visit. The Docker River Campground is in a very nice setting with those great Desert Oaks. Seeing you would be so close, go on further to Giles.

All the Best

Hi Rod,
Forgot to mention that the permit to head out that way is FREE, and from the Central Lands Council in Alice Springs.

Cheers

travelled from Laverton to Yulara across GCR in 2004. Applied for WA and Central Land Council Permits a couple of months in advance. The WA one came through almost immediately. STILL waiting for the NT one - we did the trip anyway, and had no issues. Incredible scenery - a trip well worth doing.
