Twenty two years ago i went to Ayres rock like a lot of tourist, but unlike most tourist i MAY or may not have taken a piece of Ayres rock. didn't think much of it then, just thought it would/could make a nice souvenir. forgot all about it unto last night. having a new robe put in and was cleaning the shelves out when i may or may not have come across it.
Now i am more sensible and understand about these thing,
also deeply regret what i may or may not have done.
Now if one would like to return it to its rightful place, and one has no idea where and to whom to send it, could someone give some guidance on this matter?

Postage back MAY or may not, be an option, depending upon the mass of said rock which MAY or may not be a tad excessive ....wink wink .. ;-)

So you may or may not be responsible for me going or not going to Ayres Rock nineteen years ago, and I was looking or not looking for that missing or not missing part of the monolith.
The rock you may or may not have taken might or might not have been a petrified or not petrified kangaroo testicle left over from the great crustacean period.
I might or might not have looked or not looked for this missing or not missing rock or not rock from a visit I might or might not have found on a previous or not previous visit, and dearly wanted or not wanted to find it again, but it was gone or not gone.
Your profile indicates you are in SA, would it be worth mailing or dropping it into the SA Parks people with a brief note of what it is and where it was taken from, and if they thought it was worth the effort, they can look after it.
Cheers

Funny you say this Shane...I was there a short time ago and there were all these "SORRY" letters from people AROUND THE WORLD who had sent a "piece of the Rock" back that they had taken some years earlier. The biggest piece that has been received back at the Cultural centre weighed 25kg !!!!!! And it was returned from Europe...how much would postage have cost !!!!

Anyway...all I did when I read the letters was laugh my bloody head off :-)

It is a piece of rock mate, get over it and enjoy the time you went there as there is no bad karma. It should be shared not feared

Was at the Cultural Centre at Ayers Rock in July and they have a folder about 7 inches thick of letters from people like you Shane.

No need to feel guilty.

Just return whatever you "might" have to the Cultural Centre, Uluru National Park NT and they'll get it...

I returned my two pieces of rock two months after taking them and sent them care of the post office. We didn't know it was an issue but heard all these horror stories whilst on the oz trip and thought it was the right thing to do. Felt better ever since.

So tell me Shane, how did this really make you feel? I see you felt deep regret, but what other emotions did you experience?

I reckon just the fact you have or have not realised what you may or may not have not done is compensation enough... Maybe it's time to post it to the NT national parks people. Don't feel too guilty man. Times have a-changed (as Bob Dylan once said) and we now know better.

You will be amazed at how much of Ayres Rock is actually sitting at the park headquarters.
Talked to a german couple once, apparently there was a container load sitting at Frankfurt Airport awaiting return.
Have been told personally by a Mutitjulu community member that they do appreciate all the returns .

Oh shoot!!! I didn't (or did) know that souvenirs were against the law.

So after reading Shane's admission (or NOT) I realized that on our tv in the lounge room we might (or might not) have three (3) gibber rocks that might (or might not) have come from Birdsville!
Whilst I realize that if everyone sampled a couple of these gibber rocks, pretty soon they'd be all gone and no-one would remember them, I can't promise that I'll remember to take them back with me when we go out there next time.....

Cheers

Brian

If all living Australians, and all the tourists here at the moment, and all the unknown illegal immigrants and Europeans overstaying their visas took 20 Gibber Stones home from the Strzelecki Desert, they might clear a patch of a 1000 metres by 1000 metres.....hahahahahahaha

the monolith is definately smaller and if all the rocks were returned the pile of rubble would be bigger than the rock itself, bugger it just keep it or be a real sinner and sell it on ebay

Hey everyone, I live and work at the Base of the rock(Mutitjulu) and there is an Urban myth regarding the taking of pieces and the sand around the rock....... bad luck is suppose to follow you until its returned..... we've had letters returned to us with sorry and then letters a couple of weeks latter from the same people saying that life has returned to normal.

It depends on whether you believe in old culture superstitions

Do's this mean I will have to send my bit of the Berlin wall back to the "Der Vaterland" Ich hoffer nicht. Maybe one night I may or may not get a visit from the "Der Policei" "Hey Dumkopf, Ve Vant our wall back"

Cheers, hiding under the bed, Colin.
