Has anybody got any comments on the 3D version - it's advantages and disadvantages .
I run the old non 3D version now . Would I just upgrade this or would I have to uninstall it and install the new 3D version ?
Thanks ,
Willie .

The 3D is an additional program. It is a good novelty but I find I dont use it any more as is does not add that much.
You need to by the 9 second DEM info to make it worthwhile.
It enable you to do a plot on a may in 2d and then view the map and plot streched over a 3d wire frame. All very intersting but I find time does not allow such games any more :)

No you don't - free NASA 3 second DEM data is available here and has been for years....
SRTM Download
Much better than the 9 second Aus data.
3D is great, if you have a use for it. If you don't then it is of novelty value only. Only one person can decide if it is of any use to you and that is you. It certainly looks good when used on the
Pilbara and Kimbelrey maps sets :)...bit boring in flat areas.
Cheers

Thanks Greg,
I didnt realise the down graded shuttle radar data was publicly available - I'd better update, 3 second will certaily improve terrain relief.

No worries
There is actually an automatic file download function inbuilt into OziExplorer (when you have installed the 3D program) which will download the relevant 3 sec height data file for the map you have currently open.
Hit the 3D/Elevation menu and the second item from the bottom is Download SRTM Height Data (World 3 Second).
Instructions on use of data 9and other data sets is here
