Found an interesting website, Ive had a browse throuh some issues and I totally agree with most of what I read, And I reackon the Eastern States pen pushers should have a good hard look at their situations too,
I know this subject is going to throw the cat amongst the pidgions but a good sensible debate is always benificial,

The imposition of the 130kmh speed limit after one and a half years has not helped reduce the road toll. Tragically it is 43 compared to 26 at the same time last year, and was 57 in 2007 the highest this decade compared to 44 in 2006 before limits were introduced.

Doug,
I wonder what the CLP's position on this is? It is just the sort of issue that can sway NT politics. No election coming for a while now of course.
Matt.

Gday Northerner,
I have a mate who has been involved in accident investigation, Police and the NT road safety council for years and has access to the real stats.
A couple of years back we went through the road fatalities stats.....
We took out all the accidents under 130km (because that isnt "speed related")
All the drunk drivers.
All the people not wearing
seat belts.
All the un roadworthy vehicles.
Yeah ...you guessed it....bugger all left. And if you wanted to take out Fitzes in Britzes!!!!!!
Its just another cases of a brainless Pollie trying to make a name for HERself.
Cheers Hairy

Increased travellers / Increased tourists / Increased

Doug, I was working in the
Alice Springs Hospital Emergency Department for a while before the 130kmh restrictions came into place.
The only car accidents that we received in ED or even heard of had nothing to do with excessive speed on the Stuart highway. The only accidents were drunk Aboriginal drivers, single car rollovers on dirt roads, and cars hitting, or swerving to avoid animals whilst driving at night.
NOT ONE from speeding on the highway. Maybe they should ban driving on the highway at night?
The government themselves admitted that there were many other, more dangerous factors that contributed to serious car accidents. So I didn't understand then (and said so on this
forum) and still don't understand now why they changed these speed laws!
Maybe a recommended speed limit similar to Germany's autobahn would be better. I think it's stupid that somebody can get a fine from driving over 130kmh!

Maybe the 130kmh speed limit is a good thing
Having lived in the Territory for many years I cannot see what the fuss is all about.
Most of the people speeding on the Hwy are Fritzes in Britzes, local Public Servants in marked Govt cars or the Constabulary
When I was a youngster and when we had fast cars, we used to drive at a speed. Nowadays however 110kmh is about optimum for me and driving up the Stuart Hwy I have found that very few vehicles overtake. The faster you gi the more you have to concentrate especially when scrub cattle wander across the black top indiscriminately.
As posted above. More people, more vehicles, more accidents..... a simple statstic
Cheers
