Rudall and motorbikes?

G'day all, I,ve always loved an adventure and as far as forby's go,last year Docker River, Googs and Flinders In Oct 08.
My question is this: I'm planning a long tour on the motorbike(my other transport) up to the Kimberly. For those that have been there; is it reasonable to try to get to the Rudall river on a bike.
BMW 1200gs Like Ewan Mcgregors. What mileage? and any water on the track.
Cheers Paul

Thanks for that Bagwon. Just thoughts at the moment. The Plan is Adelaide -Alice-Tanami-Kimberly then where the whim takes me. I read the article in exoz and it looked great. Within reason the track is not the issue its more the old bugbears of fuel and water.
Thanks Paul

Paul,

I've done a lot of travelling to, from and about Rudall. You shouldn't have a probelm on your bike and in fact once there, it'll afford you a lot more freedom to see some of the amazing places up there like Darlsen Pinnacle and Camel Valley where tracks haven't been put through to. Fuel and water depends on your route. Did you have anything in mind as yet?

Thanks for that Mick. Just rough plans so far. Hope to head off in april for two months Adelaide-Alice up the Tanami to Halls-Kimberly-Perth and home. Should be long enough to break in a new-ish swag.
Fuel/water as always the issue getting off main rds. Rudall looks just my speed.Like the peace and quiet.
Bike has a range of about 400k and should easily carry extra to go 600k. How dose that sound?

Paul,

one of the biggest problems with fuel out there is that the remote communities like Parnngurr (Cotton Creek) on the Talawana and Punmu up on the Kidson are only stocking diesel these days. The only place near Rudall that has unleaded is Jigalong and that's near 300 km away. On the top side it's Marble Bar and then nothing along the Telfer Mine Road making it nearly 400 km into the park. There is no fuel available at any of the mines along the way (Woodie Woodie, Nifty or Telfer).

It might well be worth strapping another 20 litres somewhere on the bike for this trip or organising for a vehicle to carry fuel in for you if that's possible.

Water shouldn't be an issue for you with plenty of permanant pools and a hand pump at either end of the Rudall Access Track (although the water at the bottom pump has been pretty crook in recent times).

The top hand pump has been hijacked by a geosurvey mob so If you can find out who they are (I think Barrick Gold have been doing the work out that way for the past few years) that may also be an option in getting someone to run fuel in for you. They are running some pretty big (non diesel) electrical and pump units.

If you are using a Garmin GPS, I have track files that may be of interest to you. Let me know.

Cheers Mick

That's great info Mick just the sort of stuff I want to hear. Can definitely carry more fuel but lots of fuel and water would be tough.I get spoilt tooling around in the patrol, you take range for granted.
Off in the morning skiing at Falls for a week so i'll get onto it a bit more when I get back.
A fuel drop would be perfect as she don't run too well on diesel.
Thanks again Mick

Thanks Alan- great site no detail on fuel/water but obviously do-able. Have the same bike so if he can I guess so can I.
