haven't done that drive in the last couple of weeks, but have done it a few other times. i would think you'd be fine to tackle it on your own, the 3 times i've done this trip the crossings have never been that deep. unless there's just been a heap of rain out that way you'll be lucky to use 4wd, i know i've only ever driven this road in 2wd due to it being pretty easy going. the crossings all hard a good firm base, last time i went they had new gravel been dumped in them as it was after the big floods they had out that way.
not sure about trip notes on the book, but if you go from boonah to killarney via the condamine, then up to daggs falls and queen mary falls, then take the alternate route back to boonah, it makes for a great days driving. the alternate route back to boonah is bitumin, but a very scenic drive.

We have done the drive quite a few times over the years and can say it is very scenic and you would only need to be careful just after a lot of rain as I believe it can get deepish and rather fast flowing, but is usually quite low. You will note the odd 4wd track along the way and a few spots to pull over for a barbecue. I believe it is about a 2-3 hour drive. Enjoy.

This picture is one of the crossings mentioned. 40 2wd rally cars traversed the gorge last July. i wouldn't want to do it in a down pore as one section has a steep slippery climb. They took the fun out of it a couple of years back when they filled the crossings in a bit. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy.
