On Patrol & TONI
Now there is a viable alternative to the repair of a Nissan ZD30 that is modern, powerful and reliable, other than a chunk of GM V8.
Here is the full story on TONI from start to finish.

Colin,
I have watched your progress with TONI from a distance, intrigued a little to say the least! A pity the "Hand-Grenade" went bang, but on the
bright side, you'll get plenty of kilometres out of the Tojo motor & transmission.... and coupled with the Nissan running gear, TONI should be .....
well...... genuinely Unbreakable!!
Loved the story on NomadicLife too!!!
Well done!
Cheers
Brian

Thanks Bucky
All I ever wanted was a good reliable car. I'm not out to knock anyone off their perch.
But, if Overlander come good with there apparent desire to run a story on TONI, then I will not say no.
This will be the last posting on TONI, unless someone asks about her. I dont wish to
bore you all with too much bragging.
The support by this
forum was fantastic, I therefore felt obliged to post the story on here, but enough is enough "The End"
Thanks Bucky and everyone.
Colin.

What a wonderful solution.
Glad it all worked out for you Colin .
In a recent 4wd action competition my reply was that what the world needed was a Nissan with a Toyo heart.
I didn't win the competition , but it looks like you have won with Toni.

Great write-up Colin. I always reckoned the the 80 series 4.2TD was the best 4WD every made, but I think you have gone one better now. Cannot beat the strength of the Nissan drivetrain and the engineering of the Toyota motors.
Cheers

>>> 3. 4.2ltr Nissan Diesel, converted to automatic, The motor is good, however the conversion is un-tested. $10,500 to buy a motor only.
Untested? I'll go burn
mine now. Voxon should also torch his.
A new in crate TD42 from Nissan is $6grand!

Truckster,
that 4.2 @ $6Grand is not a FULL motor with pumps, injectors, Alt, A/con fan and everything else needed, so add that to the figure and you arrive pretty close to what I said. Also what price to convert the 3ltr gbox to the 4.2 motor?
The final figure was going to be
well over $10,500.
The Toyota FULL assy at $11500 including 5spd tranny computer transfercase wireing harness and a host of other bits needed for the conversion looked good to me, and it works
well.
If you fell the need to torch yours then I know where you can get a good conversion done like
mine. LOL
Thats all history anyway, you should have told me 3.5 months ago.
Cheers Colin.

I think the Auto (JATCO) behind the 3L is the same that has been around for quite some time, including behind the 4.2TD in other markets.
Not bagging what you have done but rebuilt long 3.0Di's and kits are now available for very reasonable prices and if and when
mine goes bang that is what I will do. People tend to get a bit myopic about the reliability and forget the 3.0Di is in fact an excellent performer.
I have both a TD100 and a 3.0Di and don't consider the performance difference to be great with a Dtronic on the 3.0Di. In fact I think the main difference is the gearbox, the Tojo 5 speed is a pearler. The 3.0Di is better on the open road (likes to rev), the TD100 loves to grunt.
Personally I think you have a great combination but it would be hard to justify it on $ and simplicity.

I was correcting your inconsistancies.
Auto GU's in 4.2 have been round for years. Complete conversions can be had for $1500 from wreckers. Finding someone who knows how to get computers talking is the trick.
and TD42s are $6k, yes without the accessories. Most people buying them dont need the accessories.
