Why not connect the van up to the car and then go and see if the van lights work????
Chances are if the auxillary wire in the socket is live then the 12v lights in van may work.

An afterthought. I have an extension lead made up so that if I have to disconnect the vehicle I can still have power to the camper trailer/van.
For the purpose of 12v lights in a caravan, most caravans will have its own battery.

PS Keep asking until you get the required info. Give as much detail as possible so that readers assess the problem correctly.

Its not a stupid question if you provide enough information to get a sensible answer.
A What brand and model is the van
B Does it have batteries in the front boot.
C Have you tried the lights while its sitting in the yard
unconnected to the car.
D Has it got a switch inside marked 12v off 240v
