Have just got back from a trip I had been looking forward to for some time. In brief I left
Echuca 22/7 going around Aus on the Inside. Route was through Ivanhoe-
Menindee-
Copley-
Oodnadatta-
Coober Pedy-ABH-
Laverton-Kalgoorlie-CSR-Halls CK-
Kununurra-Buchanan Hwy-Barkley Stock Route-Ranken Rd-Mt Isa-
Birdsville-
Walkers Crossing-
Innamincka-
Bourke-
Echuca.
After 14500k I had no punctures but a few problems caused by ground clearance especially up the CSR. Bash plate brackets on chassis broke off. I did the rest of the trip without it which left the vaccum operated device under the diff exposed and later damaged. Auto transmission developed a bad clunck between 2nd and 3rd in low range also.
Need for communications was brought home when i came across a couple who had been stranded on the ABH for 8 days. They had a broken diff housing and then a flat battery on their Navara. Fortunately when the diff broke other travellers were passing who had communications(not sure if sat phone or
HF radio) and could help them arrange a new diff housing sent out. They replaced this only to find they had a flat battery. I gave them a jump start and lend of sat phone and they were away.
Had agreat trip and will put a report on the blog soon.
To increase ground clearance how big a diameter tyre can I fit to a Triton on standard 6x16 rims?I've got 225 75 16 at the moment. A couple of tyre dealers have suggested going 235 85 16.
Cheers
Tony

Sounds like a very enjoyable trip, can't wait for more detail.
How people can travel those areas without comms is beyond me.

Sounds like a GREAT trip.
Well done. Make sure you post a detailed trip report. I had more than a few diff bolts work themselves loose on my Navara on the Canning a couple of years ago. Thankfully arrested the problem before it got serious. Will look forward to reading your report.
Cheers. Mick

I don't know how they will fit on a Triton but I believe 235 85 R16 are the largest diameter tyres that will legally fit on a 6" wide rim. I have in the past investigated the same for my Prado which also runs little 225 75 R16's.
You will find this size is 60 to 70mm larger in diameter than 225 75 R16, depending on the brand.

Have done that to my pajero, so it should work on your triton with a similar chassis.
Running 235/85/16 - 10 ply - (805 dia), originally were 235/75/15 (735 dia), so they give me 35mm more clearance under the bash plate. 10% difference.
Speedo now under reads by 3km/hr, it was over reading before.
Odometer under reads by 5%.
Some people have gone to new rims and fitted 265/75/16, which are also 805dia, but clearance on the front on full lock is tight.
The paj is not as quick off the line with the bigger tyres, and low range first is a bit higher.
Thanks for the trip report. Got me thinking now. :o)

Thanks John.
Ground clearance was my biggest problem on trip and if there was one thing i would change would be tyre size.On the sand hills i got bogged a few times by the weight of the being taken on the belly of the vehicle.
My speedo reads about 95 at 100 kph so 235/85/16 should similar to similar to yours which would be ok.I thought some one else on this site had used 265/75/16 on their Triton so 235/85 with the same diamater should be ok on
mine. I am more concerned about the effect of gearing it up and if this will work against me in the bush.
I might chase up some second hand tyres and try first before outlaying on a new set.
Cheers
Tony

If you are in southeast Qld, you could borrow 4 of my rims for a couple of weeks.
I have 10 rims for 3 axles with a range of tyres. Some rims are getting down on rubber but would be OK to try.
The 265/75/16 just catch the front sway bar on full lock and bump, if you are using standard offset.
The 265/75/16 also stick out 25mm further since the 7" rims have most of the extra on the outside of the rim.

Thanks for offering of a loan of your rims. I have a spare set of 6" standard rims that i bought prior to my trip to get one extra spare(was cheaper to by a second hand set of 5 than buying one extra spare from a wrecker).Tyre dealer will lend me a used set to check the clearances etc.If all ok will probably buy a set of Goodyear MTRs in the 235/85/16 for trips and keep the Mickey Thompsons ATZs 225/75/16 for general use.
Cheers.
