Hi folks
Just got my electronic Aldi brochure for next week. Amongst quite a bit of camping gear they have a 45litre 3 way fridge for $299. Does anyone have any feedback on these?

Aldi make great Tasty Cheese, superb Hot Dog Rolls, brilliant imitation Twisties and their Leg of Lamb is without peer.

We bought a GPS from them. Dog of a thing, batttery wouldn't hold a charge, holder fell to bits, hard to use etc. Compared to the Nav Man we replaced it with...well, chalk and cheese. Customer service is nothing to write home about either.

Also bought a DVD recorder from them, poxy instruction manual, hard to operate......

They're a grocery store.

Would you buy Bananas at Repco?

Jim.

Hi Tessa,

We've had one for about a year now, and have to say that we have not had one problem with it. We didn't have high expectations, but it has been great up till now.
I guess you have to decide what you want from it. If you're unwilling or unable to spend more money on a fridge, then this could be a good option.
Cheers,
Jeannie

Thanks Jeannie. As well as touring, we have a little hideaway we go to for three weeks, twice a year in the caravan. I thought one of these might be ideal for a situation like that. Just put it in the annexe to keep the drinks cold. It would allow us to use the Engel purely as a freezer. Do you find it works equally as well on all 3 power systems or is there one which seems to be more efficient?

Hey Tessa,

Like any 3-way fridge, it runs really well on gas, not so good on 12V. We cool it down for a couple of days at home on 240V before we leave, use 12V while travelling (not great - but maintains temp) and then change to gas on arrival. Even during last summers really hot weather, it did a good job, getting down to about 5 deg on a 40deg day - gotta be happy with that. We have another fridge in our camper, so this is a secondary fridge for drinks.
On a cold night while winter camping, we have to turn it off or the beer freezes.
I think it's far more than a "cooler" and would serve you well for the purpose you mentioned.

Cheers,

Jeannie

What you need toi know before buying one of these things is what sort of cooling range capacity it has. This one (Aldi) looks very similar to the one sold by k mart under the Jackeroo brand name and another brand name. The instruction manual talks about the ability to pull the temperature down 20 degrees from the ambient. I tried one and couldn't get it below 8 degrees on a
cool night. Your home fridge probably manages 4 degrees and food will spoil above this.
This is not a fridge, only a cooler so for $299 it is poor value.
There are people who buy Tevion branded electronic stuff from Aldi and navigators, who could for a hundred dollars more get good stuff from an electronics store but.................

I had a reasonably long look at one a few weeks back. The manual says it has a "T" rating which in Electrolux-speak means Tropical so should theoretically work in higher ambient temps. The interior was a good size, large cooling plate and will take full-height bottles. It has thermostat/control on both gas and 240V. No external tiedown points which may be an issue.

We have an old Finch that we take if staying in the same spot for a couple of weeks to complement the Autofridge in the car. Works very well on minimal gas as long as there is good ventilation at the back and it's fairly level.

At $299 it's good value compared to the Jackaroo/Repco if the extra size is of use to you.

Thanks Adrian. I'll at least go and have a look at one. I have even been considering one of those small 240 jobbies. A PITA to carry around but just the thing once we get where we are going.
