G'day all.
My TD 100 is about to click over 150,000 km and it is also about to go into Toyota for the third time to fix leaking rear axle seals on both sides.
Leak is not enough to warrant always checking diff oil levels or anything, it is just a weep. Problem is the brake pads get oiled up and smoke something terrible with a bit of downhill work. Recently my bride bailed out because she reckoned it was on fire!
Has anyone else had this issue regularly?
Any thoughts on what may be the cause?
By the way, rear diff is fitted with airlocker.
Cheers
Jeff

Does the locker have seals to keep the air in and if so would be worth checking in case they are pressuring up along the axles and blowing the seals

Graham has a point.

Maybe the rear diff breather is blocked and the diff is getting pressureized via the airlocker?

me 3, i reckon the O ring is either cocked or it is buggered.plus the diff breather must be blocked for this to occur. has it had diff oil come out of the solenoid??

Jeff,

I recently blew a pinion seal in the rear diff. Cause was a blocked diff breather.

Thanks for the comments.
There is a fair bit of oil around the compressor, but I've not worried about that as I thought it was common (normal?) with the lockers.
I'm an absolute dummy with mechanics so will get it looked at by the ARB people in Geelong.
Cheers

Did you tell Toyota it has an airlocker.
If you didnt its like pushing s**t up hill with a rake trying to find the reason why its doing it.

Geoff ..
I have had a similar problem with my 95 EFI Patrol. ONE rear wheel weeps with similar results to your TD100.

I had the inner & outer seals replaced ... costly as in my model the bearing needed pressing off, destroying it in the process.

Was OK for say 20K, but then they replaced the outer seal only (for free). Unfortunately the problem returned about 20K later.
My local mechanic said .. maybe live with it!

The diff oil level doesn't drop noticeably .. so I live with it checking regularly.

When I later replaced the break pads the service person said that he noticed the leak & fixed it at no cost. However guess what the problem returned after another trip to WA (from Qld)!!

I have no lockers etc. but wish I knew the answer. There are no threads re this type of leak on the patrol4x4 forum.

good luck .. G

This from an article on LCOOL

cheap fuel filter or the filters ARB use on their air compressors are good to use on your extension diff breathers. Especially if you're running air lockers. These will let enough air through in the event that you have a locker piston seal failure and end up pumping 120 psi through your axle housing.

Seems to perhaps give the answer
