Hi all. Can anybody help me with my alternator problem please? I have a 96 model 80 series with the above engine, auto trans. Every morning I start it the alternator has only 12.3 volts at the alternator. Exactly 2 minutes later the charge rate jumps up to 14.1 volts like someboy flicked a switch.
The alternator was over hauled by an auto elec. Next day exactly the same. They had another look at it the next day, same thing. They reckon new diode pack because it had a crook diode. The second time a new reg. They have had another look at it and they reckon it was a bad plug connection at the excitation wiring plug. Guess what. Next day still the same.
Me thinking three times your out.
Its been doing it for 9 months. Once it warms up it fine until you shut it down for a few hours.
Its running a dual battery system with an ABR isolator. No other mods to the wiring.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Scott

Well dont know about yours but 1HD-FTE is exactly the same and looking in the manual it says its because the battery supplys current to the glowplugs for 120secs.
When I leave home the battery gauge shows low till I reach the corner of my street and then it pops up to full charge. Ask Toyota if that is correct

Good theory but no glow plugs in
mine. They do have a pre heat element in the air intake so I will put the volt meter on that when I start it on Monday morning and see if that has power for 2 minutes. It is something for me to check.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Scott,
Its the preheat element. My 1HD-FTE does it too.
Cheers

120,
has it always done that? the 100 series does not charge immediately after start up, it kicks in after about 1 minute of running, a relay clunks in and it starts charging. thats when its cold but when warm it charges almost straight away after starting. i will ring my mate and see if his 1HD-FT 80 series does that also. cheers Paul

I have only had it since September last year and it has always done it. When you start it cold the lights are dull and the wipers hardly work and as soon as the alternator clicks in everything brightens up.
It might be how they are.
I have ordered a manual so I will read up on it when that turns up.

Yep the 80s must be the same, he is not home but going on what others have said the 100s and 80s are like that.

Exactly the same in the 1hz/75 series.
The glowplugs must really take a whack out of the system. Two mins. later a click from the relay (behind the glove box) and the voltage needle jumps up.
And as other reports, only when the engine is cold (first start of the day)
