why do you feel the need to clean it,
is there no airflow thru it, is the a smell? to clean the evaporator you would have to degas the unit and uncouple hoses at the firewall, remove the fan and heater box housing, remove evaporator and clean for what specific reason

Exactly what autosparky has said but also pay special attention when undoing the pipes, being aluminium they tend to bind on the threads when trying to undo resulting in stuffing the threads on both the evaporator and pipes going through the fire wall which can be a costly exercise. Most come undone ok but have had a few bind up. There really is no ther way to clean it 100% I did take myn out of the hilux as it had a terrible dusty/musty smell even when just using the fan without a/c on, it was mainly due to all the dust and crap that got stuck to it over the years but I was lucky and had no issues with the threads. When on dusty roads I would prefer to use recirculate to try and stop the dust from sticking to the evaporator due to the moisture, I normally turn the a/c off 5 minutes before Im about to put the car away for the night so that it will dry off a bit in the evaporator. I don't use the air half as much as the wife does, she has it on pretty much all the time. Regards Steve M

Thanks for that. I was thinking that the manufacturer's might have made it easy to clean given the nature of use. lol

blue,
Was at
Longreach Ag college last february, and the mechanic there had to do this on a dual cab hilux.
He removed most of the plastic cowling surrounding the evaporator, pulled up the floor mats to open the floor bungs, and hosed out the dirt & gunk, with garden hose.
Was working like a bought one later that arvo.
No doubt you'd have to be a little more careful with the hose, and the carpet in the Nissan.
Bugger taking it out, you're only "giving" money to some aircon expert.
Hooroo,
Bob.
