hi everyone,
got a zd30 that has developed hard to start problem.
When cranking, tacho bounces of max rpm and when eventually starts after 30secs to a minute engine light comes on. Crank sensor code. Replace crank sensor and problem still there. If i disconnect crank sensor there is no tacho but starts almost instantly in what i suspect is failsafe. Other notes are it starts quick if jump started from my landcruiser or run started. Thinking earth problem but all service manual checks are ok

You say it starts ok when jump started from another vehicle, which means the voltage is probably dropping to much when cranking on your battery meaning the battery is probably stuffed. Easiest way is to go and have the battery load tested at a auto-elec or battery supplier. I cannot see it being earth or other elec problem due to it jump starting ok.

Thanks Chris,
I thought the same and replaced battery. Crank sensor is a three wire unit similar to an ABS sensor where it uses a reader wheel with four steps on the crankshaft pulley and the sensor is a magnet therefore giving the computer a sine wave (Above and below OV) not a digital signal. Dont know whether the computer has to see the signal go above a certain voltage but i rckon its too low hence guessing earth problem.

thanks for the reply guys,
New battery fitted, went over the top and got a 730 cca. Same problem. Fuel filter new and fuel checked Ok. Checked all earth points (four on intake manifold and three to body) and all test OK with ohm meter. Even ran wire from each earth point to battery ground. Still same problem. On some earth points though they do splice into up to five wire. Going to check voltage drop instead of resistance this time! Any more ideas welcome!

Try this first.
Run another earth lead direct to the motor, a slightly loose (for flex) earth lead to a rocker cover bolt, was the answerer.
I got caught, cost me $200 for a new 720CCA starting battery, and there was nothing wrong with the old battery.
It's a $35-$40 fix, if it works.
Cheers
Bucky

ITS FIXED!!!!!
Took vehicle to dealer to repair oil leak under workmanship warranty and told them to check problem (engine rebuilt not long ago!) and told them to check codes. Told me what i already new (crank codes) and said i needed a new pump ($5000) Wrong!
Got it back home and checked all earths again for umpteenth time. Borrowed oscilloscope from mate and after alot of checking found starter motor to be faulty and giving the computer a bum steer in pulse. $100 repair to starter motor and she's all good!
Thanx to all who replied and kept my mind working! somethings are a lot simpler than they seem!

Hi wellbrad,
What was the sample rate of the oscilloscope you used and was there a data line that ran from the starter to the engine management computer.
