No.....inexperience and lack of attention and or fatigue, as the case of most accidents.

Signman. You must have been at Birdsville the same time I was. We saw this car as well, sorry I did not say hi. Cheers Tony

Aloha Signman....what better way to give me 'visual reinforcement' of what I dont want to happen.
I guess like most aviation disasters..."human error" put these cars in a sorry state.
I am definitely going to show my co-driver these pics!
Thanks!

Every time we've been in Birdsville during school hols over the last few years there has been at least one if not a few vehicles that have rolled like this.
Twice it has happened to others camped in the camping area near us who have left and returned later that day on the trailer.
Personally I think people travel way too fast for the conditions due to a lack of experience, when they get a slowly deflating tyre or a soft bit of road they loose control and over they go.

Not much damage on the Xtrail to suggest that speed was the cause.
The Cruiser well possibly a contributing factor but looking at the standard setup possibly the driver was inexperienced & adjusting his Tom Tom at the time, who'd know. All just speculation.

One common factor seems to be the standard road tyres - does that tell us something?

Tessa
It tells me that road tyres are an advantage in sand over aggresive pattern tyres. But on closer inspection the Xtrail has road tyres and the LC has AT tyres.

I tend not to use aggresive tyres in sand, and all 4x4 tyre makers recommend AT's for sand.

In sand the tyres, as such were not the issue, the pressures, the speed or the steering wheel nut was the problem, or should I say "The nut behind the wheel"

PS This is what an AT tyre will do in sand, in fact a bald tyre in sand is even better.

No argument from me Colin - I was just assuming that they had come to grief on the way into Birdsville from somewhere other than the sandy bit to the West.

Tessa, you may indeed be right too. Not everyone who goes to Birdsville goes to the desert or has been there. I like to get a grip of the road and not have my tyre cases cut about too much. Once again it can come back to dirt road experience.

Ha Ha yes, and I assumed the opposite and they were retrieved from the sandy bit to the west. I proves we are all individuals, and none of us experts, LOL
Cheers Colin.

G day all !
I agree with all the above.

Now this is what I was told, by a so called mate, when he found out I was going to Birdsville.

"Just go as hard as you like, all you are gunna do is run off the road, and there is nothing to hit, and no coppers to pull you over, in the desert"

Yeah right, dkichead, any wonder so many vehicles trip up !

I drive to the conditions, end of story.
So why would I want to do the roll-over thing, to my pride and joy. Not likely !

If I'm tired I pull over, and, as we do not want to miss anything, I drive at a speed that will allow us to do this.

Two fold effect here, 1) you save on fuel
2) keeps SWMBO out of " squalk mode "

Cheers
Bucky
