Just had my fix for today of the daily ritual....lmao. was watching an old fella trying to back his van , wife was giving directions on a hand held cb , she was saying left, meaning she wanted the back of the van to steer left so he turns the steering wheel left ,so she yells at him, he drives forward without straightening it all up and does the same thing again, how in hell they manage to get here from Victoria is beyond me. ..

Doug

I guess I am lucky that you didnt run into us on our travels. The way that Tracy and I argue first about where to put the camper and then which way it should face would have kept you amused for hours Im sure.

Cheers

Not if the Bride and I were there! I am embarrassed to say that she'll never learn what needs to happen and I'll never learn to stop arguing.

Kind regards

i must admit that it's part of our entertainment aswell in caravan parks, boy you see some sights that make you wonder.
one trip to Warnambol a car towing a camper pulls up on the road next to were their site was, out gets the wife opens the wagon and pulls out a chair and carries it to the nearest tree and parks herself there, while hubby tries to then back the camper into the site, he was doing well until he found the only tree on the site with the back of his camper, everyone including us were yelling for him to stop and running towards him, which he didn't, one bloke who was closer than us went and banged on his car to get him to stop as he was still trying to accelerates backwards (jammed up against the tree) doing a far bit of damage to the camper, finally he got the message stopped and checked out the damage, and his wife still sitting on her chair never even moved or spoke and where she was sitting had a better view of what was happening than anyone else, it makes you wonder alright!
and those couples that the husband does all the backing, hooking up, peg pulling- the works, while the wife just stands there or yacks to the neighbours, or tells him how he should be doing it, it's then that i say to my hubby aren't you glad that i'm not like that, as we share all aspects of camping, perhaps that's the way the others enjoy it i don't know.

My Cook and I share all the Put Up and Pull Down Duties, and I
reckon by Xmass, she will be able to back the Caravan on to a site,

When we are backing the Van, one of us will walk beside the Vehicle offside Passenger Window, and give instructions,
No Screaming Matches.

We enjoy the team work of backing in, setting up and packing up. Always did it camping, with the CT and now with the Poptop.

However, I have learned that we have to define what left and right mean. We agreed that it would be left means back of the van go to the driver's left and right means go to the driver's right facing the front, and I translate that into wheel movements. That works much better - all we have to do is remember to translate correctly.

Also, if we need to talk about anything, I have found that its real easy to hop out and look together and agree what to do next, without trying to talk over the UHF.

Most times these days though, we don't use the radio unless its a tough track in - hand signals or best of all Jan stands by the passenger window.

When we are settled and others are coming in, we do try to respect their privacy and let them do it without staring and grinning. "People in glass houses ..."

We use the hand held radio also with no probs plus the rear view camera helps. Our biggest problem is selecting a site when Alternative camping where we wander around trying for that elusive perfect side. You know shade, flat, with somewhere for the solar panel to go out in the sun, with any wind to the van rear. God it's a hard life ain't it.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

G'day Doug,

After a lot of years we work on hand signals. The boss uses her thumb to point left and right and the old faithful stop if I lose the plot. There are a few other hand signals she uses at times which we never discussed previously. It's all good though and the old portable UHF is great as well.

I was camped beside my brother about 12 months ago at Yamba when a guy coming onto the site at the back of him actually backed through the end of my brothers roll out awning and did a heap of damage. Lucky it wasn't happy hour as one of us usually sat there with a beer in the afternoon.

Have a good one.

Similar entertainment can be had at most local boat ramps on a sunny Sunday morning. Best to go mid morning. The blokes who know what they are doing have all gone out early but around 8am onwards there are the complete nobs that seem to come out and struggle to keep it all straight as they attempt to back the trailer down to the wet stuff.

Then they faff around getting the winch undone and remembering that they forgot the back tie-downs so have to pull it out again or push the boat off after forgetting the front rope or using one that is too short.

Then there is the retrieval when they have to reverse an empty trailer down the ramp (where did it go??? I can't see the damn thing!!!).

Great viewing!
