Using Google Maps with OziExplorer

Using a little programme called gMapMaker you can capture any Google Map region for use by OziExplorer. Enter the co-ords for the top L corner and bottom R corner of the region you want, select the format you want to save (eg PNG, or in the case of the sample below JPEG), choose the magnification you want (15 in the sample below) and click save. It automatically generates the .map file need by Ozi too. It also generates maps useable by MacGPS Pro, so Mac users can run moving map software without tooling around with emulation software look Parallels.
I find the 'Terrain' view in 15 magnification as useful as 1:25,000 maps. It makes the 1:250,000 maps look very low res. I was very excited by this and thought some others might be interested too. Image Could Not Be Found

Yep it's a good way of making ready callibrated maps. The only problem being that the Google server will lock you out for a period of time after you make three maps. You then have to wait anywhere from 2 to 24 hours before you're IP is off the blackban. I used it to good effect on my trip out west this year.

Cheers

Can't say I'm having a lot of luck - I was blocked on my first attempt at downloading a Sat image.

When I downloaded it via a proxy it was all white at Magn 15 or 18.

Terrain Map at Magn 15 works

Just tried downloading "driving maps only" at Zoom 18 - wow, that is useful - it shows the actual lot boundaries and house numbers.

The JPG is 5Mbyte for 1.6 x 1.2 km map.

This I can download without going via a proxy.

Mike, what format are you using to enter coordinates? When I try to enter a degree symbol I get an error ;-(

I'm entering as decimal degrees e.g. -34.567, remember it's minus for Australia.

Yeah, that works better, but now I seem to be having problems with the #%#% proxy servers here. Will try it again from home..

Got it to work from home. Could be a handy thing for the odd map. Can't see me downloading many as my IP keeps getting black listed...

Hello
Short discussion on this same subject (gMapMaker) in thread 57270 in May 08. There are a number of other programs that do a similar thing. Certainly is handy. I am lead to believe that its only when "capturing" sat/air photo images that you will get temporarily banned - which can be frustrating.

Cheers
