Tent rental for fraser island

Dear all

We are planning a trip to fraser island where we will only hike (we do not want to rent a 4WD), but we need to rent a tent + small camping gear for 2 days.

Would you know of a place where we could do that around hervey bay? It is hard to find from France....

Thanks in advance

Vincent

If you don't want a fancy hiking tent, then tents are very cheap to buy here. You could pick a 2 or 3 man tent up for well under $100 - probably under $50 if you only need it to last a few days.

Vincent,

I've hiked fraser Island twice now for a week each time. It's definately a better way to experience the island than by car. Both times I had gone in our winter (june / July). The weather is warm during the day but can get cold during the nights, but it is usually dry, so most nights we slept under the stars without a tent. All you need is a good sleeping bag.

So as mentioned above, when you get here to Aus, buy a new tent for under $100 or a secondhand one from other backpackers.

Having said that, 2 days (nights) is not enough. It will only allow you to walk to lake mackenzie and back to the ferry. I'd recomend 4 to 5 nights.

Have a look at the walking times to give you some planning ideas.

also check out the rest of the fraser island site for more info

Cheers,

R.

Hi and thanks for the answer

Indeed we will consider buying a tent this looks like the best solution

Concerning the walking distance we have looked at your site and we considered the following walk :

we hire a taxi from Wangoolba to the valley of the giants's camp / or the beach just east and camp there

Next day take the great walk to Lake Wabby (16km / 6h)
then onto lake Mc Kenzie (12km / 4h) where we camp

next day walk back to ferry in Wangoolba creek through central station

------------------------

Alternative route would be to stop at the beach east of lake wabby and the next day go back to the western coast

We figured that it is better to do a one-way hike

However we may have been ambitious, though we are pretty good hikers, since we could not find a detailed topo map anywhere

We are very open to suggestions coming from your experience. Honestly we may manage to squeeze a few extra hours but our planning is already very tight we only have a month to spend in Australia yet it seems riduculously small !!!

Thanks anyway

Vincent

I have walked all of the places that you mention (and a lot more) on Fraser and might make this suggestion.

There isn't anything particularly interesting about walking the beach.

The Beach is a Looong way from Valley of the Giants.

You are not allowed to walk 'off track'.

If you really only have three days, then I'll suggest the following

Barge to Kingfisher Bay, walk to Lake Wabby, via Lake McKenzie.

Camp night one on the beach (that will have been quite a big day)

Day 2.

Walk to Central Station via Eurong and Pile Valley.

Camp night one at Central

Day 3

Walk to Kingfisher via Basin Lake and revisit Lake McKenzie, then the Z Force training area at McKenzie's Jetty, and 2 kms up the beach to Kingfisher

(I have done this walk myself a couple of times)

I'll second what is said above. Altough depending on what time you start you my just want to get a taxi to lake wabby.

Remember that the walking times on the previous link do not include rest stops. So a "six hour" walk with a 15 minute stop every hour and 45 minutes for lunch turns out to be more than an 8 hour trip.

And most importantly, take Sand pegs, any pegs you have with a cheapo bought tent will do nothing in Fraser Island sand.

And if you live in brisbane you can have,if you can collect it, a 2 man tent I have that is no longer used but is fine for Fraser Island.

and i should have added what i meant was it can get very very windy on the beach so if you pitch a tent with normal pegs and go down to check the water, it might not be there when you get back. Though you have to be careful you get sand pegs that fit into the tent peg holes, or at least have hooks on the end you can put the rings through. hope that make sense.

You could probably buy a small dome tent and one of those small butane stoves from KMart. I'm sure you would have no trouble selling them (or giving them away) before you leave the island.

Be aware of Dingoes...
