I have come to the conclusion that we need a camper trailer for camping. I have twin boys and to set up a tent and all the stuff to go inside takes to long.
I would like to buy an off road trailer and then source a camper top and assembly my self. A 7 x 4 heavy duty trailer with high sides, 7 leaf springs and hubs cost about 2500-3000, but when I mention camper trailer the price for trailer only costs $4500 to $5000. What strength do you actually need in a trailer to tow on tracks like the Old Gahn railway, Oodnadatta track around the Flinders and the like. I would think corrigations would be the worst for trailers.
Any advice would be great.

Thanks in Advance

Alex

Hi alex
Last year we put together a camper (on road) complete for just under $3000
We went to one of the trailer people in Perth (Loadstar) tolld him how deep we wanted a 6X4 trailer wind down legs at the back spare wheel swing up jockie wheell he had it ready to roll in 2 weeks and was the most helpful bloke that cost around $1300
we then bought an OZ TRAIL 6 and put it all together complete with annexe walls ( don't bother with them) for about $2800.
So I reckon if you can search out such a place that would be the way

Not sure what State you are in...I bought a new offroad trailer, 7 by 4 from Quality Custom Trailers of Minto NSW for around $2k.
5 leaf springs, treg, 15 by 8 new rims. My top is Oztrail 9 off Ebay
for about the same brass. Have done Ood & GRR , no problems.

Alex,

Here's how it works. A decent quality Off Road trailer should cost you close to $3000 retail. A decent (imported) top will retail for around $2000 retail.

Camper Trailer builders buy these thing at wholesale prices, put them together and add on their margin. If they're not too greedy you can pick up a decent off road camper ready to go for less than $5000.

Jim.
