Hi,
Just wanted to give a heads up re the new Freelander 2 Land Rover. They are the real deal. Had mine 6 months and thrown just about everything at it. It has won several 4x4 awards in Europe and the 2.2 diesel and 6 speed auto is perfectly matched.
I also got 7 ltr per 100k's on the highway.

ps
Land Rover were owned by Ford and have recently been bought by Tata (India). The Freelanders are made in one of the best factories in the world, Solihull.
Anyway in case there is anyone out there that doesn't drive a Toyota or a Nissan. Check out the Freelander 2. It's not a Range Rover but it's bloody close!

Different manufacturer and multi millions put into the design by Ford. Chalk and cheese. I know Land Rover well. Don't forget they were the original four wheel drive. Learnt to drive on a 1959.
My last Land Rover before the Freelander 2 was a Dicovery TDi. I've had Range Rovers and a Defender. And which car one the last multi four wheel 4x4 mag comparison against both the new Landcruiser and Patrol etc? A Range Rover Sport. You want to drive something special, pretend you have the cash and go to a Rover dealer and test drive the Sport.
Cheers

Stormbay we have a 11a and 111 on our family farm. So know all about rover broken axles etc. Their both siting in the shed, bother was going to make one good one out of the two of them. Their is a good reason cockies all drive Toyotas.

Good review except the idiot is still trying to compare to the Freelander 1 and reliability.
Do you watch Top Gear? They voted it best mid priced 4x4.

We had a 2001 Freelander from new - what a heap of s**t. It was the most un-reliable vehicle that I have ever owned in 40 years of car ownership and I have owned some shockers. It was also the first (and only) new vehicle that I have ever owned. We loved the Freelander BUT we sold it because we could not afford the repair bills once it ran out of warranty.

Now we have a 2000 Rangie - better but than the Freelander BUT still a few light years behind our Toyota and Nissan for reliability and cost of ownership.

You cannot beat Landrover vehicles for technical innovation, comfort, un-reliability and depreciation.

Would we ever buy another Landrover product - only if it was the same price as our current Rangie ie dirt cheap to offset the running costs. We would never ever buy a new one again as we lost 80% of what we paid for our new Freelander over 4 years - it hurt big time and the previous owner of our Rangie must have lost the same % amount over a similar time judging by what we paid for it ie a small fraction of what it cost new.

Johnny D, for you, I hope that you do not experience the pain and heartache that we went through and I certainly hope that the depreciation is not what we experienced.

Good Luck, you will need it and we love the reliability of our Toyota Troopy and Nissan Terrano II - not to mention the minimal depreciation..

Johnny D - Just read your post on the Rangie Sprot, yes, i have done around 5000km in a Rangie Sport Supercharged V8 - what a weapon, a real great vehicle BUT the owner is also plagued with it always being in the workshop - the reliability of that Rangie is even worse than ours and it is 5 years newer.

My guess from my own experience is that things have not changed a lot as I know a lot of Landrover owners as I am associated with 2 Landrover Owners clubs - one in OZ, one overseas and a lot of those mebers have vehicles made over the last 3 years. Even Freelander 2 owners are having bad runs with their vehicles.

Once again, good luck ot are you a Landrover nutter that cannot see any wrong in them, no matter how un-reliable they are. There are a lot of them around.

Thanks. I'm not worrying about depreciation because I feel like I have found a 4x that has got it right, and I won't be selling. Comfort (something Toyota can't do unless you have a Sahara), economy 7-9 ltr per 100), also better than Toy or Patrol, Looks, well that goes without saying, most advanced 4 wheel drive system going. Sorry but I owned a Cruiser 80 series and I didn't like it a bit, uncomfortable, gas hog, terrible road handling etc.
