Hi Redbakk,
thanks for bringing this up. I am going to check my tyres now as I am intrigued. I asked about tyre dating at a local tyre shop early this year and was told it didn't exist. Now I know a lot better.
Thanks
Nev

Hmmm,
Tyres on Jack are all dated 0208 which is good. Spare (another brand) is 0201 and a virgin, oh poop poop poop!!!

Never heard of it before and I've worked in the industry. I'll go and check mine now though.

This story was on Current Affair or 60 Minutes here several months ago. Almost identical details. The date stamp on the tyres was pointed out to a group of us on a tyre factory tour in the late 90's.

Is it a proper date stamped on them or a set of numbers in some sort of code?
Cheers Dave...

I can't load that page because our IT Nazis at work have blocked the site.
I'm guessing that you are referring to the date of manufacture of the tyre, this came up when i bought 4 new tyres this year. I told the fitter that i wanted to start rotating the spare, which i hadn't done this time, thinking it was a good idea to have a pristine tyre ready for service as needed.

He lifted the Exploroz Cover and looked at the date stamp and said no way. It's a 2003 tyre and out of manufacturer's warranty he would be worried about using it as an emergency spare let alone start putting it into active duty.

So i have a $300 tyre sitting on my rear door which may or may not be able to get me out of trouble. It has never touched the ground since being fitted but it seems its past its use-by date.

That's so interesting, Thanks for posting it Redbakk.
The date on mine is 4707 so I'm happy with that, however I have another set of road tyres that I bought brand new in about April (from a place I dont usually get tyres from) and the number is 1201 so Im assuming the were made in 2001. Not impressed. Still look perfect. Do I dump them or risk using them??

Use 'em, earlier this year I fitted a set of four all made in 2002, they have done about 10k so far.
The ones that I have just replaced were 2002 (same batch) and they just plain wore out despite all being plugged and repaired at some stage.
