So if I have a bit of load in the rear, and maybe the trailer ball load as well, and pump up the air bags to level the suspension, does this nullify the brake compensating valve?

OK, things you think about when travelling.
On the highway on the way back from Darwin, when I had to do a brake and swerve to miss a goana, I started thinking about the braking on the old paj.
It doesn't have ABS, and just a brake compensating valve in the rear. You know the thing, a spring from the compensating valve in the rear brake system to the axle, so if the car is loaded, it gives a bit more braking on the rear, or proportionally less braking to the front.

Suppose the same would apply with a caravan and a load distribution hitch?

Is it worth worrying about and can you do anything about it?

The answer is yes it does reduce the compensation but only marginally so have another beer and continue driving. Suggest it's not a good idea so swerve to miss goannas or anything especially with a van or trailer on the back. Brake hard but stay in a straight line and it may prevent you from looking like road kill.

God I wish I was on the road at the moment, next month the high country Yee haaa.

Was almost going to run over the lizard.
Had already wiped out a stupid lamb on the trip and missed a couple of wallabies.
Semi was coming the other way, and I decided that was room to go around the goana without scaring the truck driver.
Apologised to the truckie on the CB, but he had seen the goana too, so knew what I was up to.

Glad I have the clearance of the 4wd and 4wd trailer to straddle some of the road kill on the road. Could be a bit dicey with a standard car missing road kill in the middle of the lane, and having traffic coming the other way.

If you trim the vehicle stance by using air bags (instead of WDH) you raise the rear suspension and th brake compensating reduces the braking effort on the rear wheels without putting weight back on the front wheels t0o improve the braking performance of those front wheels.

If you trim the vehicle by using WDH then you both take weight from the rear wheels as the rising suspension removes the braking effort from the rear wheels. At the same time you transfer the weight from the rear wheels to the front ones and make their braking dynamics more effective.

Very timely question, I am fitting air bag suspension to my 4x4 today and was contemplating the very same question. What I decided to do was to load the vehicle with my normal travelling set up and the standard suspension, then accurately measure the angle of the arm. When the air bags are inflated to the ride hight I wont I will then rework the linkage to the same angle. Hope this makes sense. Eric.
