Garmin Windscreen Mount problems.

I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 310 almost 4 weeks ago & have been reasonably happy with it until today.

I hadn't used it for a couple of weeks & needed it to find an address, when I put the receiver into the bracket I noticed that it was loose on the vertical plane, so initially I flipped the suction cup 'lever' to refit the bracket, this is when it all went 'pear-shaped'!.

Well, I couldn't move it a millimetre, I tried lifting the little tab on the suction cup itself, still stuck like the proverbial to a blanket.
In the end I had to work all the way around the soft plastic suction cup to remove it from the screen, this left a black ring of plastic still stuck to screen which had come off the suction cup, obviously rendering it useless for reaffixing.

I live in Victoria, we have had a few days with temperatures in the low to middle 20s & the suction cup had obviously 'melted' to the screen.

My question is, why would they make the suction cup out of black plastic?

I have had 3 previous GPS/Navigators prior to this, a Mio (POS), a Tom Tom (same) & a $100 generic no name Ebay one which was excellent, now all of this had clear plastic cups, the most recent, the Ebay no name Chinese 'special' was on the screen for 13 months with no problems.

I suggest that Garmin owners try removing their brackets to see if you have similar problems.

Garmin have offered to send me a new bracket, which is fine, UNLESS, it too welds itself to my screen after 2 weeks!

Hi Shaker,
I have had exactly the same problem with the suction cup on the bracket of my Garmin Quest. I'm not game to try and remove any more in case I get the same result as you have described, as it is in a good position on the windscreen it will just have to stay there.

Bad luck if wanted to use the unit in another vehicle!

Cheers, John

You should report it to Garmin, freecall 1800 235822
At least they will send you another one.

They told me they had never had the problem before, I didn't believe it then, I believe it even less now!

Doug, I know you like to promote the quality of Garmin products here, bu to be quite honest my $100.00 Chinese no name GPS was much better, including more comprehensive street mapping.

Garmin have a lot to answer to, after tellling there was no precedent to my problem, please take a LOOK HERE!

This is not a cash for comment game with me, my names not Alan Jones or John Laws, I push the Garmin because I believe it to be best user friendly product , just one step ahead of Magellan, anything else don't get a mention, as for you saying a bloody lousy $100 gps is better than a garmin and having better street mapping , don't talk such dribble, get your hand off it.

That's a rather heated reaction to a statement of fact.
I object to you suggesting that it is dribble, which is quite odd coming from somebody that posts more off topic posts than anybody else.

Now, READ MY LIPS ... The $100.00 Ebay Chinese GPS is better than my current Garmin Nuvi 310, inasmuch that it has given NO PROBLEMS for 13 months & has better street mapping for my uses than the Garmin.

Now do you understand!!

BTW, at no stage did I suggest it was "cash for comment", but after your reaction, I now wonder?

Could you point me to the pages that refer to Garmin flimsy mounting brackets?

Having been in the marine industry for 23 years, I think I understand GPS technology.

At no point have I criticised the GPS itself, only the mount.

They may be very good..... but when you have to pay almost as much for a map update (that corrects errors that should not have been there in the first place) as you can buy a complete (non Garmin) unit for, then it sux.

And by the way Doug, I did lick it......

Cheers

Mine sometimes is difficult to remove, but i haven't had the plastic peel off yet.
I don't leave mine on the window when I am parked in the street because i see it as an invitation to would-be thieves to break in and see if the device is inside.
So this constant removal may be a help in it not sticking....just a guess.

Hey Wayne, our thieving scum look for the rings left on the windscreen by the suction cups these days, so it doesnt help much by remving the cup. Have had 2 breakins at carparks in Melb and neither had the cup on the screen... just the telltale rings

Yeh Bonz,
I carry a rag and give the screen a quick wipe. I know it's anal but I saw the telltale ring the first time i took it off and thought about the evidence that left.

BUT ANYWAY

Those "Garmin Lock" stickers will protect me won't they???? LOL

Gday,
Thats just not good enough!
To offer a replacement for a faulty suction cup without throwing in their first born child!!!!
Any decent company would have thrown in a family member.
(or at least a free knife set)

LOL

Maybe if you give it a wipe of nose oyster when you stick it on your window next, Ive found that lung custard seems to dry out and perish the rubber.
You do no the suction cups are made out of recycled condoms, dont you? Anouther good reason not to lick them.

Cheers

Why don't you just keep your infantile comments to yourself!

The simple fact is, if the first one lasted for 1 month, why will the replacement last longer, there are many other instances of these failing.

"Infantile comments"......Bit sensitive arent we?

"The simple fact is, if the first one lasted for 1 month, why will the replacement last longer, there are many other instances of these failing. "

Maybe they have changed suppliers BECAUSE there has been others failing, and others complained to Garmin rather bagging them on the internet.

But hey......why not just assume the worst.

It was never intended to be a "bagging", merely providing a warning to other owners to check theirs & maybe not leave it on the screen, as they are failing worldwide.

As I said, Garmin are replacing it with 'no questions asked', but they also said that there had been no modifications made to the mounts to alleviate the problem.

Happy with my $20 "plastic fantastic" from DSE. I think I'll need a crowbar to get it off the windscreen :)))
