They really are under powered. I looked at them and got a 4.2 turbo and am more than happy. All the 2.8's I drove if you didn't drive like you stole it then it was like trying to go upstream against the current in a row boat with only one oar.

I owned one for three years from new. They are very sluggish in the lower torque range but ok when they get their revs up. They are ok if you just want a vehicle for general use but definally not for beach work or heavy off road use. Regards .. Nav.

In response to your question, CHECK THE COOLING SYSTEM!!! the main issue with these motors. If it hasn't been looked after you WILL crack the head at some stage.
As for an opinion on the car,
mine (GU 2.8) has got me every where all the BIG motor 4bys have gone. I have no real issue with the performance
Cheers Stefan

I have had a gq 2.8 for 3 years now, andyes on take off they are a little slow but when they are up and running they are fine. I have been everywhere the boys with their big toys have been and kept up.
Mine had the head done at 180k and apart from that i have had no problems with it.
I think they are great.
cheers

Have had a GU 2.8 ltr T/D Patrol since new in '98. (138,000 ks)
Had a few problems fixed under warranty, to do with the computer, but since then have had trouble free touring. (touch wood)
They don't have stump pulling power, but with the addition of a computer power chip can make them a little more easier to drive with a little better low down power.
Depends what you want, if you want something with race car performance then this motor is not for you.
This motor does not seem to be plagued by dramas the 3.0 ltr diesel suffers from.
Good luck with your decision.
