We are planning a trip to the west coast of SA between
Port Lincoln and
Ceduna in early January. Will be in a 100 series TD with a Tvan camper trailer. Most of our previous trips have been up north in winter and we have not camped in this area before. Any suggestions for good
camping spots would be appreciated. We are self sufficient and so do not need organised
camping grounds but don't mind using them if necessary. I expect that at this time of the year it will be busy but we prefer non-crowded
places.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Cheers
Dave

Not quite west coast but just this side of
Tumby Bay is Lipsom Cove. Its a lovely secluded spot with
Long Drop Toilets and a long beach to walk on. At low tide you can walk across to a small island where birds nest and may see a Sea Lion or two. Its a bit smelly but you soon get used to it.
There used to be a
free camp at the end of Harbour View Road at
Venus Bay. This was a while ago so not sure if it is still so. Find a faint track at
end of road leading around some scrub to an isolated spot near the
water for a quiet
camp. No beach there.
Haslam also has
camp sites right on
the beach. Small fee or donation required.
A little way past Cedune is
Fowlers Bay. A magic spot but that may be busy in summer.
Usually I just follow my nose, keep my eyes open and find lots of nooks and crannies away from popular
places to have a quiet
camp for the night or a couple of days.
Cheers

Gday Willem,
We passed through
Fowlers Bay last Friday night. The very small cramped caravan
park was full, and there were just 2 cabins vacant next to the
shop. Not much option for campers. So half our group took the cabins, and the rest camped at a favourite spot on the Eyre Highway.
I agree its a picturesque spot, and has a lot of interesting history.
Cheers
Phil

G'day Phil
I wondered why things were so quiet here...LOL. You have been away again! Nevermind, I have been here there and everywhere as
well. Hope you had a great trip.

Yep,
2 weeks of bliss in the GVD.
I'm trying to show some self-control and resist the tyre threads! I'm guessing you and Davoe are doing the same :-))
Cheers

David,
Here are a couple of spots, we have driven between
Ceduna and Streaky a couple of times and the spots below would be okay.
North of
Minnipa there is also a couple of spots, see my blog - search on "Googs", posted 15 Aug.
Acramans
Creek S32 27.736 E134 04.418 - not far from
Ceduna, reasonable area to
camp and close to the
water, would want to check the tides etc, the
camping area is lower than the
creek next to it and has known to get
water in it if there is a King tide.
PERLUBIE LANDING S32 39.651 E134 17.738 - just out of
Streaky Bay,
beach access, probably popular at that time of the year. Small fee, a couple of dollars I think.
Enjoy

hi you can't go past
Elliston, I'm sure you wont be disappointed, it's one of our favourite spots (pitty it's so far away), we stay at the caravan
park near the jetty- lovely caretakers, very clean and helpful and they have a very large freezer room to keep your catch in until you leave, there are a few bush type
camping spots around there and at Sharinga (a
salmon beach). a great spot to catch fish (salmon by day and tommies and squid by night) and to unwind, one word of warning though stock up on your food if you can at
Port Lincoln before you leave as there's not much shopping there and the prices show this.
have a great time Chris.

Thanks for your reply Chris. We are looking forward to a different type of trip to our usual touring up north.

you wont be disappointed I'm sure there's some nice spots up that side, and make sure you checkout the sea lions at
Baird Bay near
Streaky Bay, it's quite a laugh some of the things they get up to and looking in my camps4 book there is bush type
camping there as
well, Chris.
