Suspension

Hi All
I recently put a 150ltr fuel tank in my patrol I have now found that I need to up grade the suspension I would like to lift 50mm would I need to put air bags as well? I do tow a camper and have a roof rack. I look froward to feedback.
Cheers

Perhaps progressive springs and polyairs would be enough as its only the back thats really affected

Hi Guys,
Yeah Air bags wouldn't hurt with that much extra weight.
They're something I would like to get in the near future, just for the weight I cart about, three kids and all their crap, Camper. I good mate traveled around the block about 18 months ago in his 80 series. He put a set in just before he left, reckons their are great. He had put in an 175 lt tank, I think it was that big. Swung his spare on a carrier with a Jerry can holder. He was towing a camper tent trailer as well.
I believe he got Opposite Lock to install them for him. He was very happy with them.

Matt,

if your carrying that much stuff and are going to be using the higher (and probably stronger 22mm) springs etc, you may want to consider having the spring towers reinforced. I was very concerned due to the anount of weight on the back of my Patrol (I have the 145ltr tank, Blackwidow drawers, two fridges, tools, roof rack and tent, dual rear wheel carrier and 2 spares) and the trailer I was towing this year, so had Aaron at ATOC Autos in Belgrave South fit his reinforcing system. I know that Wombat Off Road in Ringwood also do the same thing although they actually cut off the original towers and replace with a heavy duty set. Amother consideration particularly if your thinking of putting airbags on. I've heard that they have been the root cause in many cases of cracking in the towers.

Something else to ponder.

Cheers

Mick

Matt
I would not worry too much, after all you have only basically added another approx. 60 kg to the weight of the vehicle..

The question I would ask myself, is this the straw that broke the camels back.
Before you go to the added expense, just do some homework and add up the total weight ( guestimate only ) ..Then look at the big picture.

Tend to agree with Bucky here - The tank itself is only an extra 30 kg and when full ,50lts more is only 35kg

Small weight increases like this can be corrected with low cost spring spacers - think I used 15mm ones on mine when I went big tank.
