Cleaning up the trip photos today and found the photo's of this little chap. He was the gem of our trip this year and we encountered him on the track only a couple of kilometres from Durba Springs. Image Could Not Be FoundHe/She is a Stimsens python, brilliantly patterned, native to the dry inland and rarely seen. Apart from a Carpet (Diamond Python) Snake in Victoria (and that was an escaped pet), this was the first python I'd seen in the wild.

While only about 1.3 metres long, he showed a fair bit of dash and struck at the vehicle as it passed before deciding that discression was the better part of valour.
I should add that these photos are taken with a zoom lens at a good distance in an effort not to disturb the chap. Didn't work as the vibrations from the motors got him into defensive mode.
One of the less frequent outback encounters.

Great photo Rob. I remember watching a pair of them fishing near our
camp on Fraser a km or so south of the Maheno.
Cheers. Mick

Years ago I ran over one accidently. I stuck around longer than the snake! Tracked him into the dunes (for a pix) where my sense overtook my stupidity, and I retrurned to the vehicle. :))
Thanks for that, Mick.
