Hi,
Took the caravan (2ton) for a trip on the weekend and did'nt think the brakes were working to well I had the controller adjusted right up and it felt like normal driving but you could feel the brakes work if you use the manual slide any solutions?

Have you checked the brake adjustment on the van itself? I'm not sure what the recommended interval for adjustment is, but I do it at least every 10,000 KM / a couple of times a year.

You need to jack the wheels up and support it well as you need to get underneath to make the adjustment.

I live in a retirement village with a lot of grey nomads and it would be one of if not thee biggest problems with caravans.
I have built a special set of test gear to test brakes. One thing that is not really possible is to test c'van brakes when the c'van is not moving and not possible to adjust them when the c'van is moving.
The test gear consists of a battery, a series of switches and lamps and a socket to plug the caravan inton.
Each circuit when energised gets a full 12+ volts which enables the road and c'van interior lights to be tested and by applying full 12+ volts to the brakes checks may be carried out to see if the c'van brakes fully apply. (full 12v is not always possible when using the car brakes if the car is not moving)
I also do allot of the brake adjustments on the caravans in our compound. This is done with the c'van jacked up and all the hubs removed. This way the wheel bearings can be checked, wear on the drums, shoes and magnets can be carried out and also ovality of the drums. I carry out all preliminary checking of brake adjustment with vernier callipers

Sometimes there is a difference in braking depending on the weight in the caravan, such as the amount of water in the tanks.
A good indication is when the brakes are on park and the caravan is then loaded it can be hard to let the brakes off.
Otherwise check the terminals for corrosion as this makes a big difference.

Ted
