Apparently there is a Happy New Year email that has a Christmas.exe attachment.
That attachment has a worm in it.
Was there an attachment Doug?

No.... no attachments because AVG anti virus deletes the attachments before I even see it .

Without being able to identify the attachment, I can't be sure, but it may be this one:

Doug they are probably getting your email details off your web site.
Not much you can do except what you currently are doing.
I use
MailWasher which allows you to vet your email before you download it.
This was you can view the basic details of the email and delete it at the ISP server level without even bringing it near your PC.
Just adds another layer of security protection and not very expensive.

I don't know how they get the email address, I think as with bugs it's all automatic and all this crap is darting around the world at the speed of Light, anyhow the AVG anti everything is doing the job ,

John, I use mailwasher too. Great software.
At one stage I was getting about 300 plus spams a day, plus about another 200 on my other four email addresses.
Even bought a copy, since the free version only can be used with one email address.

Doug,
Was that hotmail as in doug@hotmail.com, or mailwasher?
Mailwasher does need some training as to who are friends :o)
So the first week or so does take a little patience.

Download "Mailwasher" and keep it running on your machine. It enables u to bounce spam, and delete any unwanted mail directly on your ISP's server.
Only the stuff u want, actually ever reaches your machine, easy install, works, and it is free.
try at 'www.mailwasher.net', too esay.

the only problem with the mailwasher is you might loose some mail which was ok and addressed to you. I use a spam filter which I can check from time to time. It too gets the good mails from time to time but at least I have a chance to find them.

I bought a copy of mailwasher.
It keeps emails for 30 days and allows you to restore them.

Hi Guys,
I use a program called Pop peeper. Get it
Here.
It's not a filter, it just allows you to see what is at your server before you download it. You can delete emails without having to download them. Very handy.
I have also set up a Gmail account and forward all my mail through their spam filter and use Pop Peeper to view whats good and whats not. Besides Gmail has a 7 Gb of space, which come in handy if we're away for some time. Once a week I clean out what it has found. With Gmail I can access my mail anywhere and on any computer.
There is one Golden rule with emails.
If you don't know who it is from 'DON'T OPEN IT', Even if it is Address to you.And keep your Anti Virus up to date.
If you have deleted a email that is important and for real. The sender should get in contact with another way.

Jon
I use Bigpond as an ISP so can go direct to webmail and see what there before it's downloaded by Outlook, I then delete most mails with unwanted stuff like many jokes with huge attachments thus saving on my download limit, Just that some get through unexpected like the one from ny Daughter that had 14mb of photo's it....Grrrr , apart from that AVG takes care of viruses etc but these stupid emails with just the text still get in, at the moment though I'm trying Mailwasher to see how it goes,

Hi Doug,
That's the best way to do it. Check at your server what is waiting for your mail client to download and delete it before it has a chance to be downloaded. Jeze, 14 mb, that's a big email even for me on a very quick 1500/256 plan. Did she re size the pictures or was it just a lot?
I'm very aware of what other peoples connections are so I don't send them big attachments and clog up their connection. Nothing worst than just wanting to check something out quickly and you can't cause there is a huge email downloading.
Try setting up Pop Peeper Doug, saves you having to login to your webmail. It sits down by your clock and lets you know when new mail arrives. I have MS outlook Office 2007 set up to only do manual send/receives, so if I forget it still does not download them automatically
People just have to remind themselves that it is a scare world out there in Cyberspace. Don't trust anything or anybody.
It's all too easy to be stung by a Trojan/Worm, Keylogger, Virus.

I run CA Anti Virus. My ISP has cranked their SPAM filter up to maximium strength.
My website is rather busy, for a personal one, with 400,000 hits per year and I got targeted big time with SPAM receiving up to 40 per day at one time
SPAM is now down to zero with an occasional one getting through.
Anythging that looks Sus to me gets SHIFT/DELETE
Cheers

You can stop web spiders/bots etc from extracting email addresses from websites by encrypting the email address within the HTML code. There are several online
tools that let you do this. where you would have a usual mailto:address@domain.com
this is replaced by a javascript that encrypts the address. yet when a browser renders the code, it appears as normal. Not entirely fool proof, but certainly goes a long way to stopping the addresses being abused.
The spiders/bots can extract the plain text addresses from the HTML code very easily and then these get thrown into various spam databases etc

You can set Outlook to just download the email header and an indication of the email's size without resorting to outside products.

Yep, but Mailwasher is much more than that. It allows you to bounce the offending emails back to the sender as if you don't exist. Over time it really affects how many spam emails you get.
I receive about 2 spam emails per week at the outside.
It also learns bad email addresses and marks them accordingly.
Best little investment in software I ever made.

Here is a FREE OFFER, just give me your permission to security checks on your HOME or BUSINESS, just leave all doors and gates open for me, it is all FREE, any offers??? NO! Why not??, you do with your PC!
Remember Y2000!!!!!
I use bigpond with outlook express and never get any unwanted E mails, other than the first few minutes when first setting up a new account, this is what I do, in outlook, tools, accounts, should be defaulted to mail, under mail, there should only be mail.bigpond.com and no other mail server, under ALL, should only be mail.bigpond.com anyone else shoot em

Virus problems are a thing of the past since I moved over to Ubuntu, not that I ever see any spam that gets past the GMail filter.
Very happy with this arrangement.

Agree,
Used to use BSD, and friends use to warn me about viruses that got through.
Most viruses only work on Microsoft windows systems , since that is what they are complied on. Won't run on a Unix or Unix derivative. :o)

I just get the ones advertising Viagra. What a pain in the ring...
Now I've got a bloody cupboard full of the stuff that I'll never use.
Oh, and by the way, to date received 148 emails telling me I've won lotteries and sweepstakes totaling 740 million Euros.

Doug
Try this,, I do It all the time !
I only check emails from webmail, this way I look at the headers, and If I do not know the sender, I am ruthless. I just Delete them, from the ISP site..ie webmail.. never make it to my computer
Then when I open my email program, ( which is Incredemail ) there is no junk on my computer..
Problem solved..
Mate rings me at work some months back, needs to desparately use my puter, to send emails. I tells him where my planted key is, and away he goes.
I told him to use webmail, but he used my email client, and sent only. Problem is the button says " send/recieve ",, so after he infiltrated my "puter with all the spam, that I normally delete, it took 6 months to get it back to normal..
Problem solved.... no one gets on my computer anymore, and if thet do I am there .
Cheers
Bucky
