Hi
Am seeking the advice of some experts in the GPS field. Have checked previous threads but maybe dont cover my question.
I am pretty green when it comes to the electronic world but am looking for a GPS that will mark areas of interest and perhaps be able to load up some topographical info such as if there are other gullies/creeks etc in a certain area. Bush tracks would also be a help.
I have been given 2 that may assist me.
Garmin GPS MAP60CX
Garmin Etrex Vista
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Howard

Would recommend the 60cx over the Colorado for your intended purpose. The Colorado is a newer model but costs more. It is clearly aimed at the geocaching fraternity. It is certainly good for that purpose but apart from that doesn't do much else that the 60cx wont do. Cant comment on the etrex vista - never even seen one.
OztopoV2* has good range of tracks and topo (~$230). There is also a range of free maps e.g. shonkymaps (do internet search) with less detail. gpsaustralia
forum has details on other custom maps and free contours

Howard,
I have just been through this exercise.
I have a Magellan XL which I am very happy with but wanted a Garmin unit since there are maps I need which only come in Garmin format.
After comparing the various Garmin models I came down to the Map 60CX or the Colorado 300. The Colorado is touch screen and the display is slightly larger. Very easy to use once you follow its logic. The 60CX is an older model with push buttons which are not nice to use on the move. Once it is set for a trip you really don't need to touch it. The processor in the 60CX is noticeably faster than the newer Colorado.
I ended up purchasing the 60CSX as it had a few technical features that I liked and was cheaper.
Either would do what you want. Make sure you play with them first and actually look at the maps you are going to use. Take a look at the new version of OzTopo which may suit you. They are getting the bugs sorted and the beta 2.1 looks quite good.
Send me a PM if you have any questions. I invested a couple of full days in making my choice.
cheers
alastair

The Colorado is not touchscreen, that would be the Oregon. :-)

Andrew is quite right. I looked at so many and it becomes a bit of a blur. Apologies.
The Colorado uses a wheel system to control the unit. The Oregon is the touch screen.
It is important to actually play with them as diferent people prefer different things. I did not like the Colorado wheel system but others do. Personal preference.
Thanks for putting me right Andrew.

No worries Alastair. :-)
A comparison of a Colorado vs 60Csx is available here ==>

I prefer my Oregon to the Colorado, though i agree with the notion of "play with them" first. Please don't buy a GPS without first trying it out, even if it is only in a
shop. (ergonomics and menus/screens are important IMO)

Thanks for the replies and advice. My budget allows me to purchase the 60CSX. I got on to a bloke at work who has one and seems to do all that I require.
Once again thanks.
