I have a Nissan Navara D22 with a ZD30 diesel engine and am concerned after reading this link regarding engine failures. I do oil changes at 5000km when towing and 10000km when normal driving. I might have to do all oil changes at 5000km. Any suggestions on what's the best oil to use.

The concerns with the ZD30 engine are mainly in the early (2000, 2001) turbocharged Patrols. Do a search to read the horror stories.(you may have already) Nissan recommends a Semi Synthetic oil ACEA B3, you can buy it at the dealers. Check your owners manual. Not sure if Navara engines have failed, someone will know more.

Hi Rod,
The engine that failed in the link provided was a 2005 model with 60000km caused by faulty piston rings.

The local Toyota service manager told me they recently traded a one lady owner Corrolla with 150000ks that appeared to have never had a service.
I have to fight with swmbo to get her to service her Paj and even then I have to pay for it. lol
So could be a connection.
Cheers Pete

Regardless of what Nissan says, any modern, petrol or diesel should do 300,000 to 400,000ks if basic regular maintenance is carried out. Even those cheap Korean are still going at 300,000ks.. The 3 litre engine has been a disaster for nearly 10 years.. how Nissan have gotten away with it, we will never know. I know if it was a Holden and even out of warranty, they would have made good if there was a huge failure rate as has been with the 3.0L.. It really is a disgrace!! I'm not sure if the "best oil " is the answer.. Michael

MICHEAL

i agree with you there mate but you are asking for trouble if you use a 'K-MART' or 'woolies' brand oil. as for nissans customer care, yep its a bloody joke as i found out.all we can do is hope that our rigs hold together so we can enjoy them for what they are made for as long as they can, cheers.

Have not heard of any Nav ZD30s blowing up. Few small turbo probs but nothing major. I believe the Nav engine is a different casting than the Patrols.

I know of 4 Navara's that have done in the ZD30 engines around here. They don't have a good name in this area any more. Pity, I like them.

Have you had a look on the Nissan Patrol Forum. You'll find a truck full of horror stories concerning the ZD30 engine (I've got one of them to tell myself). There's even talk of commencing a class action against Nissan as a result.

Cheers
