Caravans

Hi everyone, would like to pick some brains please. My mum has a RAV 4 and would like very much to get a small van to tow. Just something small for herself. Trouble is tow/ball weight. Everything she has looked at is too heavy, so I was wondering if anyone out there has any ideas or has come across this before. She doesn't want a camper as she is in her 60's and on her own but a poptop van would be ok. Cheers

What is the Ball weight and ATM limit of the RAV?

I am sure that the Smaller AVan or the Little Nipper type vans with the rear door would be within it's range.

Even this one would be well within the limits.

As long as the van is properly loaded and the ball weight of 70 kilos isn't exceeded she should be OK. She will need to know what the ATM limit the vehicle has as well as she cannot exceed that weight.

Which RAV4 does she have? there are several tow bars available. For the V6 the Hayman Reese rating is 1900/150, for the 4 cylinder you can get 2 models - 1200/100 and 1500/120. I would not use the lighter 4 cylinder bar for even the lightest van as it may be too ball weight limiting. These weights are for the 2006 and later models.

As others have said, there is a number of light weight vans available that the RAV. The old Viscount Nippers were 680 kg tare weight, anything else will be heavier.

G'day Trekker

Sounds like your mum's situation is similar to mine, although my tow vehicle is a Subaru Forester GT. Having had a canvas sided camper trailer when I had a family I didn't want the hassles with wet canvas again and almost bought a Little Nipper but it was too claustrophobic for me, so the search continued and I found an Avan Aliner. Perfect!!

Tare weight is 640Kg (and it's not the smallest one, but mid-size) the roof is easier than a poptop because it's spring assisted and you can setup in under 30 seconds. I pop the roof on roadside rest areas for lunch. Can even cook lunch if I wish. The low profile is also great for fuel economy and they have electric brakes...an added bonus with a small tow vehicle. I bought mine 'preloved' privately and it came with a full canvas annexe but I'm about to make a lightweight awning with zipoff walls as I don't always need a full annexe.

There are many different floor plans so I'm sure she would find one to suit her needs. The high (interior) roof gives a bright, airy feeling. I could go on and on, but if you (or your mother) wish to get in touch for more info please don't hesitate to get in touch and I'll give you the url for an online group. Quite a few members in the group tow with Rav's!

Hope this helps?
Bronwyn ;-)
