Are Troopies on the way out?

I'm just trying to substantiate/dispell the story being told by (normally knowledgable) friends that the 11 seater Troopcarrier is being phased out. With the need to purchase more vehicles in the next year or two for our local SES Unit, we need to understand if now is the time to change across to a different concept (7 seater 4wd Canters etc) or continue on with troopies. Obviously they have their benefits, however with the need for a "new fleet" we need to be in the best position to future-proof our purchases and upgrade at appropriate times.

Is there any proof (not just hearsay) that they are being discontinued sometime soon. (i don't want to troll through other forums to find the answer, when i know there are some great members who drive them here).

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Andrew,

Go the Canters,

When you guys have finished with it send it our way LOL

The Vic SES units have started to go with Ex CFA units that still have the pods on the back on them, then they just re badge them to SES and refit ancillary equipment in the Pods.

Cheers Kev

After driving around all week using Malanda's 4wd Canter, i'm almost sold on them.....even if i did rip off the flashing lights on the top (silly place to place them) going through the bush. :-)

The Acco is so "last year"....LOL

It has saved the arse of many 4wd'ers around the mudflats here though LOL

It just is a bit slow and thirsty

Hey Kev

My Oka has done close to 90 days work since I bought it in July, and my opposition's canter has done 35 in the same time.

My OKA is still going and the canter is being replaced as we speak, by the way the OKA is 11 years old and the canter is 4.

cheers Steve.

I believe Kev's (SES) Acco is slightly more than 11 years old. LOL

All vehicles along the lines of the troopie, LR110 etc will be required to comply with new ADR's which come into force in 2009. As such you can expect that beyond 09 there will be replacement models from all manufacturers (or those who are still prepared to bring vehicles into Australia) to comply with the new requirements. Given the global nature of the Toyota 4WD product range and its use by very large fleets such as the UN etc then I would be extremely surprised if the 70 series fleet was not going to still be available in Australia. The simplest way to find out is to contact your State Toyota management and distribution group and ask the question. They know model release programs up to two years in advance so should at least be able to guide you I would have thought.

Unfortunately anyone you ask in Toyota will plead ignorance even if they know some details.

The only "reliable" scuttlebutt I heard was that the new 70 range out towards the end of 2009 will have the current TDV8 (a given) and will have a dual cab version, new dash, airbags and ABS.

I'm hoping for an extra cab and an auto box.

Anything else, at this stage, is conjecture.

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
