Noisy transmission

Hi all,

I've got a little Daihatsu Feroza that I took offroad for the first time over the weekend. However, the next day, I noticed that there was a dull rumbling noise coming from some unspecified location as the vehicle neared 70km/h (but disappeared after about 75km/h). (It's not road noise - at least it wasn't noticeable before that weekend)

I took it in for a check of suspension components, as I recalled having shaken up the vehicle quite a bit over some chopped up sand tracks. The report was that everything was quite ok, with the exception of one of the front ball joints which had some excessive play, so I booked it in to get replacements fitted.

On the way to drop the car off for the job, however, I decided that maybe the rear leaf springs needed replacement as well, since it looked like the right spring was sagging a bit more than the left. In the end, I ended up with something like a 2"+ lift, as the new rear springs were considerably higher than the original, though I'm told that it should sag back down in a few months.

What troubles me, however, is that, as I drove the car back home from the workshop, I noticed a strange grating noise coming from somewhere near the transmission tunnel as the car hit ~40km/h. I also noticed that switching from 3rd to 4th, or to 5th gear doesn't seem as smooth as it used to be. However, the 70km/h rumble persists.

I'll be getting it checked out soon, but I was wondering whether anyone here had any ideas about what may be wrong?

Cheers.

Presume uni joints are ok ?? Seems that since getting the lift the noise has come on at an earlier speed and with a two inch lift the drive shafts would be at more of an angle ?? Id also be dumping the oil in the gear box and transfer case. Have these even been checked for oil ?? in either of them, Id also be checking and possibly changing the oil in the diffs. Its amazing how you think the noise is coming from say around the gearbox but could be being transferred from say the diffs up through the tailshafts. I have a noise coming from mine (I think the front) and sounds like the same sort of noise as a stuffed CV joint but comes and goes and I cant tell where its coming from. Driving me nuts LOL. Yeah, the noises are rather hard to locate.. and it's not like I can move around the car to try and pinpoint it, while I'm driving. :) Might very well be an issue with lubrication, though I did ask for all of that to be checked out when the vehicle was serviced last month.

Just a bit of a follow-up to this..

Over the past few weeks, the little Feroza has been in and out of workshops, trying to locate the cause of this problem.

I finally got it checked out by a place that specialises in gearboxes and transmissions (not a specialist 4wd place, mind you) and the verdict after a quick test drive was that it's likely due to 1) age (+ high number of k's travelled) and 2) increased transmission shaft angle due to the suspension lift. Further work on the gearbox (taking it apart, checking everything) was likely to cost a few thousand dollars.. something which I'm not really keen on, at the moment, especially after having spent a few thousand on suspension and tyres recently...

The alternative is to find a secondhand gearbox to replace the existing one, so I shall be on the look out for one around Perth. For now, I shall have to be going easy on it, until the new springs have sagged a bit, and i can get the lift ratcheted down a bit..
