Hi Folks:
I was wondering if anyone has been up to
Iron Range National Park on
Cape York recently and if they encountered any difficult
water crossings. Four wheel drive only? or has anyone been able to get that far with ease using a 2 wheel drive ute?
Cheers and thanks!
Don

A 2WD will get you out to
Lockhart on the main road (don't know about your
suspension)
Definately need 4WD if going through the
Pascoe River (plus
snorkel) Last time I went through it was very rough, flowing fast and quite deep (bonnet deep on 4WD)
However, Iron Range is a very nice part of Australia.

Hi Wompoo,
Haven't been there for a couple of years but as Alan mentioned the pascoe is not a 2WD crossing but there are 2 ways into Iron Range. My memory is a bit sus but I believe the main route in should not represent a problem
My two visits there have been in a high clearance 4WD vehicle and a lot will depend on how loaded you are and your past experience.
If you are travelling with others that can help will make a difference.
Kind regards

There are three or four crossings that will always have
water. I will not reccomend a 2wd, though you can do it. The Wenlock & Pascoe have to be crossed before Iron Range then their are two crossing (sorry can not remember names) before you get to the airport turnoff. All can be quite deep certain times of the year and the road can become very slippery with just a little ran. There is
miles of clay. I have been stuck in their for weeks and not been able to get out. The road has not long been done up, about this time last year but it will still become undriveable in a 2wd if it gets rain on it. Rain is always possible at Iron Range I used to supervise the grading of these roads each year and have been caught with rain in nearly every month of the year. 4X4 is the only sure option. Cheers Tony

Wompoo,
I was there this year.
I would not advise travelling in on the Frenchman's track to Iron Range. Even with 4x4 is very difficult at the Pasco river unless you have lockers front and rear including a bit of know how. Steep sand exit and a 600mm vertical face to climb. Not much to winch off either.
Travelling out on Frenchman's is ok but need clearance,
snorkel and does not sound like you will have it? Could end in tears..
Good luck
Marco
