My 96 GQ 2.8TD doesn't like 2nd gear when it's cold. Needs an extra forceful push. No clunking, banging etc, just extra effort. After about 5-10 mins of driving when things are all warm it's as good as new. by good I mean absolutely no problem giving it a thrashing off road in high and low range so I feel confident there is not a problem in the short term BUT long term?
Any advice if there is a problem hiding away there? Rather ask here than a mechanic who will of course say there is a problem!
Cheers,

Better quality or different grade of oil might help, best talk to a 4wd mechanic as they should be aware of any pecularities of the box. Did read something somewhere that it is actually a car gearbox? Skyline, 300z etc?

using the standard oil recommended in the service manual (and only done about 5000km's ago before the Simpson).
I have heard the same about the gear box being out of a car. I have 230,000km's on the clock and most of that off - road so maybe it's on it's last leg?
cheers,

My Series 80 had a similar problem between 3rd and 2nd. Toyota Mechanic suggested I use VMX-M oil. Fixed the problem. Had around 50K on it at the time. Has now got 260K and had no problems.
Cheers
Howard.

I suspect it's oil but seems a bit odd that I am using the recommended oil and experiencing the problem. Maybe they get fussy as they get older!
Mechanical problem would be there either cold or hot.
I'll check tonight if I am using a thicker oil and if i can go a bit thinner.
Cheers,

Castrol suggested I use "Multitrax" in my GU 2.8 gearbox - no shifting problems when cold - change it as recommended at 40 000 km - now done 235 000 km

Oil it is then! good news. Dont have to beg the wife to spend money on a new gear box. Spoil myself with some Boags instead.

Had a look at the manual. The 4.2 gearbox Needs 75W/90 GL5 and the 2.8 needs 80W/90 GL4. I use Castrol Easyshift and a bit of Nulon Transmission additive just for good measure. My old truck gearbox has 367 on the clock.
Hope the new oil works wonders.
Cheers

Castrol VMX-M 75/85 fixed my Landcruiser, so I now use it in all our other vehicles - even the Xtrail changes better with VMX-M. I'd give it a go in your Patrol. Can be hard to get it, but SuperCheap stock it now.
