I may
well be wrong as I'm just taking a punt, but I thought the Hilux had the older 5speed manual and 4 speed auto transmissions, while the D4D Prado came out with new (? stronger) 5 and 6 speed boxes, which could handle the extra torque. Also, I think the Prado has a stronger front diff.

Could be the way it is quoted - on my Hilux I think it's something like 343 Nm from 1400 - 2600 rpm, they didn't quote a peak as such.
Maybe just to make the Nissan owners feel better - I think there equivalent was about 410 Nm but at a silly 3000 rpm.
With the nature of torque curves there is obviously a higher peak figure between the 1400 and 2600 points on the Hilux - maybe that's the 410?
Or the ECU may be adjusted for the Prado?
Whatever it is they are great motors.
Mine gets about 8.5l/100km driven sensibly. Even towing a 1.5 tonne this only drops to 12.5.
Regards, John.

The same applies to the Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero, different Kilowatts and Torque figures.
Probably the gearbox limitations.

Hilux is lighter (unladen) than Prado (right?). Probably tuned for best combination of performance/economy in the lighter vehicle.

Yes, I believe it is the gearbox, the 5 and 4 spd boxes are only rated at 345nm, where the new 6 and 5 spd are rated higher. Even the petrol V6 prado was detuned to 345 nm when mated to the previous 5 spd manual box.
