Maîneÿ (wa)
somewhat O/T as I've returned to WA after spending a week in
Melbourne, loved the food there, particularly the fish & chip
shop on the old highway in
Beaconsfield and the wood fired pizza
shop in the hills nearby.
Anyway this post is about a Holden Barina with 'petrol' engine.
My daughter has done only 12,000 Klm in her 2008 Barina and when I asked how much were the
services on her car, to my amazement she told me it has not had it's first service yet.
I went into the Holden dealer (in Berwick Vic) where it was bought and was informed it's first service is due @15,000 Klm and will cost $230.
Have to wonder why I read so much about 5,000 Klm oil change intervals in 4x4's when GMH have new car warranty with a first service due @ 15.000 Klm's ?

Most petrol car have 15,000k service intervals, in 1999 Ford introduced it in their AU series 2 range and most manufactures followed.
Our Subaru has 12,500k service intervals.
We have a new Mercedes Sprinter van in our workshop at the moment and the normal service intervals are.....
Engine oil 30,000k (no mention of filter change).
Maintenance 60,000k.
Trans fluid auto 60,000k then every 120,000k.
Trans fluid 320,000k or 10 years.
Rear axle 320,000k or 10 years.
Coolant 320,000k or 15 years.
Most vehicles have a check at 3000k but nothing gets replaced or changed.

Thats pretty standard these days Mainey.
We have a Hyundai Elantra, oil and filter every 15k.
Disco 300tdi Diesel ('97) oil and filter every10k.
Some of the present generation of diesels have them going out to 20k.
Its interesting that whilst fuel goes ever upwards, the cost of a 5l. container of oil has hardly varied over the last 5yrs.
Does this mean "oils aint oils, Sol"?

I own an AUDI A4 and the first service on that was at 15,000 km and cost me $350. Very reasonable I thought as that price included a clean and detail & I had the AUDI badges removed so it does not stand out too much down at the
supermarket. The next service is at 30,000km or 1 year which ever is first. Seem the modern cars are like that. My new deisel V8 LC ute is getting serviced every 5,000km but that's up in the Cooper Basin in the dust and dirt.

Most of the 4x4 drivers talking of 5k oil changes have ancient bangers. As stated above, newer diesels have longer oil change distances. My Disco tD5 had a 20k oil change interval where the old TDi300 was 10K.
Diesel motors are also harder on oil than petrol motors.

Nomadic Navara,
please clarify 'Ancient Bangers'
1; An old cheer leader.
2; an old sausage left on the side of a BBQ.
3; Someone in their Seventies that likes to shag.
Hmm
If your referring to my 91 model HDJ80R 4.2TD cruiser,
It loves being looked after. Yes, filter and oil every 5,000k's.
As others have mentioned, these days that is being stretched in petrol engines to longer and longer service intervals.

Jon!! Have you thought about putting a By-pass filter on the LC and stretching the oil changes out to 10 or 15,000. Its fairly cheap and you can make it pay for itself in a short time.. Super clean oil all the time.. it works... Michael

Does a 2003 TD 100 series qualify as an 'old banger'??

To ensure the long interval between oil changes you must use the correct grade oil. Alot of the holdens are specifying fully synthetic oil.

I have always thought that the 5000k oil changes on a diesel were to benefit the turbocharger because of their high rpm.
15,000 is the sevice interval on my gas powered Falcon RTV work vehicle.
