The history of Alice Springs township began in 1871 when a telegraph repeater station was built there, one of several repeater stations between Adelaide and Darwin. The township that grew up was initially called Stuart, but this name never really caught on and was officially changed to Alice Springs in 1933..
Alice Springs has certainly developed greatly over the past 39 years and today the town is a modern, moderate sized municipality compared to any town of similar size anywhere in Australia. A significant part of Alice Springs history is the Ghan railway, which first arrived in the town in 1929.You can discover more about the history of the Ghan and its role in the development of Alice Springs at the Old Ghan Museum and Transport Hall of Fame.

Good one Doug

Alice Springs was named after Lady Alice Todd, wife of Sir Charles Todd of Overland Telegraph Line fame.

I will be in Alice Springs next week getting stuck into Hairy's beer fridge.....LOL

Cheers

Nowhere near the Stuart Hwy.
It was just north of Arltunga on Cattlewater Pass - taken in 2001.

Another bit of info on Alice springs, I copied and pasted from here

The sporting showpiece of the unofficial capital of Central Australia is the stunning Alice Springs Golf Club which boasts one of the world's finest desert venues set in the foothills of the majestic MacDonnell Ranges. With several quality hotels backing onto the course, why not stay a couple of days and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

The Alice Springs course has earned rave reviews from golfers world-wide as a course of unique charm blended with some subtle severity. Accuracy is a must and even the boldest hitters must harness their power and replace it with discretion to ensure a safe landing, rather than challenge the menacing rocky outcrops which lurk at the edges of several of the fairways.

Australia's golfing legend, Peter Thomson, with his business partner, Michael Wolveridge, designed and constructed the course during the early 1980's. It is currently rated 53rd in Australia by Australian Golf Digest, in the world's top ten desert courses and one of Australia's top 25 golf resorts.

There is a tornament there next week, my boss will be there

Look at the height difference of the mountains from the trees and growth.
