Hi, my 80 series landcruiser's starter motor solenoid has just started playing up and now can take 20 clicks to get her cranking over... a bit of a worry since it started doing this only a fortnight ago. I have a jack handle at the ready to give it a whack nect time ha ha.
I called repco about buying a rebuild kit as i'm sure i have bought a few off them a while ago (10yrs?). They now only sell new complete starter motors for around $600.
Does anyone know who may sell rebuild kits incl contactors, brushes etc or a good supplier of reco units?
Thanks!

My experience six months back was that (being short on for time and know how) I had to take mine to a reputable service guy and was told that it is more economical now to get a new one. Grr! Not even worth me taking the old one and getting bits to do it at home and learn they said. Grr and double Grr!
PLUS another reason I had to take it in was that there was no way with my equipment I could loosen the top bolt/stud nut. I have good arm/wrist strength, good tools, extension pieces for sockets and so and it just would not budge!

If it's the same as my previous 98 Prado, or my son's 96 Celica, then replacing the copper solenoid contacts will fix the problem. I think they cost about $10 from an auto electrician, and we did it ourselves - took around an hour including getting the starter motor out & re-fitting. The Prado worked fine until I sold it & the Celica is still going strong after 2 years.
Cheers, Geoff

I was going to get a kit installed in mine at Karatha 2 years ago but the Auto Sparky didn't have time to do it on the spot and I had to meet a truck in Dampier that same day so I bought and fitted a Nippon Denso unit , on swap over price , so yes kits are on the market,

I used to buy Echlin solenoid contacts from an autoelectrician - not sure what else is out there now. Simple job. I've never had to replace a starter - usually replaced contacts or brushes only, and once had to have a comm skimmed.

You are obviously pretty savvy mechanically Phil, I used to file the points some times if that was all they needed but getting new tips is the smarter way to go. Hope you folks are well, I think I need to be on the road again soon.

Gday John,
LandCruiser starter is pretty simple. Remove 3 screws to gain access to the inside of the solenoid and the contacts are bolted in and easily replaced. I also have to admit to filing them :-))) Hard to get parts in Adelaide at the weekend!

Folks are all well again. Only 2 trips this year - hopefully next year will be better.

Cheers
Phil

I had an old 1HZ starter rebuilt for me after it was left in salt and muddywater for 6 months.
It cost about $140 from new and used parts.
There is no rebuild kit but the parts are plentiful from places like Coventrys.
The bearing can be matched up at any good bearing shop.
A denso distributor may have all the parts as well as Ashdown Ingram(who are part of the repco group but much more knowledgeble and helpfull)

I had the solenoid on my 80 sers play up so I went to a Toyota dealer to get a replacement. The solenoid is shewn in their spare parts list but they are no longer available. I then took the car to an auto lecky who carried out the repair for $200.00. No trouble since although he did say that the starter was a bitch to remove.

Look up Ashdown/Ingram enerprises in your states phone book. They sell contacts etc for all starter motors. Thye usually only sell to the trade but they will give you advice on who to take it to.

Our 80 diesel did the same thing. Odds on the problem is the 2 copper plates in the solenoid, one of which will be burn out so badly it will no longer make contact. Answer..... new plate from the local auto electrician, cost about $46 a pair and very simple mechanics to replace. Maybe total 3 hours easy work for a half capable mechanic/handyman. Where are you?

Ok thanks so much for all of the great advice!
My 80 has travelled about 270,000kms so it is prob best i rebuild the starter incl bearings while i'm at it.
Although just the thought of removing 3 screws to get access to the solenoid's contacts and to just replace them is pretty tempting ha ha.
I'll try coventry as advised, as i do remember they have a very good range of parts.
Thanks again!
