Seems that the new veneer has finally warn off my Hilux and a clutch shudder has come to the fore. This is a bit unfortunate given that I am off in a few weeks on a 7K trip across the central deserts. This will be its second significant run.

Basically, the vehicle has now travelled 26K's, (initial signs appeared at about 24K's) it has not missed a beat in any other respect, been fully serviced and respected. It has done about 500kms with a small caravan and other than that be assured that I'm one who keeps the foot off the clutch!

The problem is most evident when cold, ie first daily start, and in first gear.

In addition to this, when I reverse I am also experiencing a shudder (slight) and a pedal noise like as if the master cylinder has come loose. There is physical feedback through the pedal as well as a creaking sound around the master cylinder area? This problem is apparent even when all the running gear is warm! The problem becomes more noticeable under load, such as backing up a moderately inclined driveway.

Before I approach the toyota dealer I would be interested in whether others have experienced this problem and what any fix has been. In fact any views or perspectives would be gratefully received. I feel it would be better to raise this issue with them from a more informed position.

Hope you can advise or share a similar experience.

I have an 03 v6 SR5 dual cab and I also get the sudder, 1st gear in the mornings...also 2nd gear is a pain until warm, I suspect what we have is common to the model, albeit I will mention it in a few weeks when the 10k service is due

I also have a dual cab diesel 2002 model, 18,000kms and having the same problem, especially when it is cold. Seems to disappear when warmed up.

I have a 2002 V6 Hilux D/C, and am also experiencing similar clutch shudder problems. Seems to be when cold its worse, and also with not many revs. Seems to get better if its revved a bit harder, which is a bit strange.

I intend on mentioning it when the 20K service happens later this week.

I have also got an SR5 Duel Cab and have done 92,000 kms. On road, off road, towing, loaded, empty, and am still on the original clutch. Take it back to the dealer.

Oh what a feeling!!!!!!!

Mate I have a 91 diesel hilux and have put three clutches in over its life and they all have the dreaded shudder, until the drive train is worn. I think toyota have started with a problem and never resolved it.
Good Luck.
