Hi all
does any one know how much grease should be put into the swivel CV joint / swivel hub when assembling?
Book say to fill the "swivel hub" to 75%.
I have been told to pack the CV unit
well and immediatly around it, but not to put too much grease in the swivel hub itself or will cause the swipe seals to be too greasy and pick up too much dirt?
I feel that filling to 75% is probably correct because if you dont and then the CV throws out grease with centrifical force, there will need to be plenty of grease to reflood the CV i guess or it may all be out around the swivel hub and not in the CV?
Is there an amount eg 500g per side tht you would expect to use on a 60 seris?
Are there any other tricks to be aware of while doing this job?
Many thanks
GN

Firstly pack some grease into the assembly, but not so much that when the axle is pressed in it pushes it into the diff housing.. you want a good backing of grease for the CV to press into...
Pack the CV
well with grease making sure you move it around as you do so get the grease right in behind the bearings... then press it firmly into place so that the CV assembly is sitting snug up against the seals etc...
Last stage push grease in the assembly all around the CV so that there are no air pockets around the sides and there is a nice concave indent at the face to allow for heat expansion etc... maybe a 1/4 of the volume free at the drive flange face...
From memory I used 3 cartridges of grease to do both sides.. but my memory is failing these days.
cheers

Thanks sea dog
I understand most of your advice but i am still wondering when they say 75% fill does this means between the CV joint and the ball of the axle housing, but does it mean ALSO between the ball of the axle housing and the swivel hub?
Kind Regards

Pack the CV itself fully... hand fulls of grease jammed up into the bearings while you move it around until the CV cannot take any more grease..
The 75% refers to after the CV has been pressed into place against the grease you put in the housing .. 75% of the remaining volume....
It is not too critical, just needs a bit of air to cater for expansion when the heat gets in... if it is overfilled it will simply press out past the wiper gasket (or past the inner axle seal but more likely past the wiper) for a while which will give a bit of grease on the inside of your wheel... no biggie!

Thanks Sea dog
so the 75% space filled with grease also includes the space between the diff housing balls and the swivel hub?
kind regards GN
