Ringing around today getting prices on a lift for the paj, Got a price of $290 a pair for Tough Dog foam cells, no worries I will give Pedders a call and see what they want for their gear. Was quoted $325 pair for their Foamies. I mentioned that I could get tough dogs for $290 a pair would they like to try and beat that.

The reply was.....Now sir our product is not comparible to tough dog, its in a league of its own and we have no need to price match and hung up on me!!!!

I put the tough dogs in on the week end :)

Cheers Stefan

I would think it would be hard to price-match on two different brands of products, however their loss (in using poor communication techniques) is someone else's gain :-)

What springs are you looking at?

Got the tough dog coils to go with them. Leaving the torsion bars original for now, just wind them up a little. Will see what it is like when the bar goes on and then see if I need to uprate them.

Hi Stefan,
Have dealt with Pedders here in North Hobart and they were extremely helpful. Mind you they were not cheap but helpful all the same. Sounds like you got someone on their day off. Rude and arrogant people normally don't last long front ending businesses and that is no bull. Sorry couldn't resist that last bit.
Hope your Paj works out well. I have a 94 manual 3.0l GLS model that has been brilliant and I just cannot part with. Mind you it isn't worth much on the 2nd hand market so I will continue to use it to cart hay and wood and such.

Hi Stefan, I have a good mate who had a pedders franchise, he would get this all the time.He was always polite but gave the same answer as you stated. He just believed in his product, good or bad.. as said above, its hard to match price on apples and oranges but he should not have hung up on you.
I am in manufacturing myself, and have much the same attitude.
cheers Shane.

I know they are different products, but you still play the Holden dealer against the Ford dealer don't you?

Retail market is very competative at the moment, just last week wife and I got a further 20% off already discounted white goods.
I always ask the question, if the answer is no so be it, no need to slam a phone down in my ear though.

Cheers Stefan

You're right Hairy, no point buying a different product just because the salesman gave you grief. I suspect he'd heard this a hundered times before over the phone, someone buying on price trying to compare products that aren't the same :-)
I always research the product I need then get the best price on that but never compromise on what I want trying to shop around saving a few dollars.
If I did I'd be driving a Lada with Tough Dog suspension, Cooper tyres & a Waeco in the boot :-)))

didn't want the pedders.......just wanted to know if they would come close in price, salesman love people like you that don't haggle, they make more commission but I don't mind at least you researched your products and compromised by paying more.

Have a nice Recommended Retail Price Day

I must be a "sucker". Most people I know in the industry are there to make a living and feed a family like the rest of us.

If they are honest and give good service at a fair price, then they get my business. I don't "haggle" - just my personal preference.

Im with you Phil,

My old man used to own a camping/ swiming pool shop, he sold everything at a fair price (minimal mark up) so if people wanted to haggle he would tell them, "If you can get it cheaper else where , then go and get it"
They would usually sneak back later as the two products werent comparable
Certain customers would get a discount but if you gave it to everyone you would go broke.

I used to pick them a mile away......As soon as they started , everything went up. A $50 sleeping bag would go up to $60. When they haggled you would drop it to $55 and they would be as happy as a pig in .......

Dad made a fantastic living from his buisness and retired early.

It makes me wonder who the sucker is?

Cheers

Just a bit off topic, about 6 months ago I approached our local Opposite Lock store about getting a lift kit for the Patrol, we talked about my requirements and worked out what I needed.

So I told him to go ahead and offered a deposit to get the ball rolling, he declined saying that the gear I needed was something he normally carried anyway and would call me when it was in.

After abour 4 phone calls and two visits to his store, all in vain, I now have a great set of Koni shocks and King springs thanks to the great guys at Guests 4WD in Fairfield.

(I really wanted the Tough Dogs though)

I belive in under promising and over delivering is customer service.

If it takes 4 days to get it in, say it will be a week and suprise the customer with it in 4 days. Just my thoughts

Cheers Stefan

P.S my bike cylinder went in for a re-bore, was told about 2 days........2 weeks later I got it back not happy, now if they had said 2 weeks to start with then I would have no problem

Hi Stefan, if its the store thats near you and me I'm surprised. I found them to be very helpful when they lowered our old commodore (waaaay to low but looked good LOL). I also took the prado there when I first got it just to do there safety check and they didnt try and rip me off or sell me anything that didnt need to be done. I new the back sprongs had sagged, the only thing they did say was there was a bit of play in the steering rack bushes. Maybe a phone call back to the manager and inform him of what happened. I dont think he would be to impressed with the staff member doing what he did to you, even if you were price matching like a lot of people do these days there is no excuse for him hanging up on you. So how much extra height did you gain in your rear end ?? Regards Steve M

Nah it was the pedders closer to my work address (dont feel the need to name the store). The new coils are 40mm raised, so we will see how it goes when they are in. The patrol went up around 90mm when I put the 50mm coils in it. I know just means the factory ones had sagged alot.

I wouldn't get the foam cell shockies as I've heard the foam breaks down and blocks up the shockie

I had new shockies put in a year ago and Pedders were the dearest. Needless to say I didn't have Pedders fitted, but Monroe Magnums

Gee cruza25 - you'll upset the old man emu purists here with that LOL!
I'll remember that when I hear someone bag pedders & monroe & then bang on about how good ome are!

How many of you OME fans would not touch the pedders or monroe because of the 'what would people think ' factor?.....

Peddars TrakRyder Foam maybe a little more expensive but they are the best. I have had a tough dog and they didn't last. I have got Peddars on the CrossXTerrain Australian Off Road Camper and and the Landcrusier. Could't be happier. Call them Back and talk to some one else!

Pedders can go rot as far as I am concerned.
Ive only ever had outlandish quotes and arrogant service from them(understanding not all branches are the same)

I laughed when the local Pedders closed from lack of business while their competition boomed.

I did not find my closest Pedders arrogant, but found them overpriced and with very limited knowledge what they are doing as least when it related to 4WD. Probably they doing better in passenger car sector – I do not know. I have approached them 3 years back and never talk to them since. As other mentioned it is a bit inappropriate to ask them match price with completely different product, as least I would not do it.

Some years back i read a link to a website off a 4wd forum.

The website was put up by a disgruntled Pedders franchisee who claimed he was systematicallt ripped off by the Pedder Family patriarrch.

Can't recall but it was something like pedderssuck.com.au or somesuch.

Anyway the gist of it paraphrasing fromazy memory, the guy complained that the co sold him a franchise and he leased a store and stocked it, etc etc - part of the franchise agreement was that he had to keep certain stock evels and products quantities, which he did. - Pedders, forced him to borrow a LOT of $ to upgrade his stock holdings og their products under his agreement which werrent selling, due to being way overpriced compared to the competition. He claimed they KNEW he was going to go under and forced him to fold sooner by using the contract conditions to break him, so they could BUY back the stock (and lease the store for one of their sons to run) at a fraction of the cost he paid them for all the gear.

He claimedhe lost his house and everything to the Pedders family over the franchise deal and that they make more out of their predatory franchiose deals than they ever do out of selling suspension parts...basically reckoned they were crooks.

healso made claims their parts were another Oseas manufactirers cheap product painted red with Pedders stickers and far inferior to most of the ocmpetition product.

Ever since reading the web site I've avoided their stores and products, - they sued the guy and made him take down the website as well....so much for freedom of speech on the internet.

How much of it was his fault maybe with poor managemet or poor marketing etc I don't know.

The only thing i do know is that usually theres no smoke without some fire - and as a result I've always avoided the product and retailer as a result of what I read about theur somewhat nefarious reputations in th eindustry - a relative who worked within the industry sort of confirmed a lot of what I read about their product - and sorta suggested a lot of their reputation was well earned, from misdeeds....

I can't comment on their product because I never used it.

What others do is up to them - the guy who made the web site was well peed off, and seemed to be doing it to save others from his fate, to my mind, the way I read it.

IMHO - I don't think the "arrogance" suggested in posts above from their sales people is an isolated thing and likely the whole shebang is some franchisee scam operation with a sly operator, cheap pseudo product, some fancy red paint and stickers and slick marketing, to reel in another franchisee sucker.

As they say theres one born every minute!

Cheers
