Auxillary Battery

I am looking at replacing my auxillary battery in my Navara. Primarily it is used to run fluro lights and 2 fridges, nd at times will be drained 5%. What is the best brand/type battery for this purpose

How long is a piece of string?

It's all going to depend on how long you go away for and how long you stay still in one spot? I have a supercharge 105 amp deep cycle and I run a 40l Engel and a 50l ABR Sidewinder fridge and I get roughly around 40 hours before it needs a charge

Very popular with 'roo shooters is the new(ish) Century ultra high performance overlander 4wd.
I bought 2 earlier this year ($160 ea.) and they are standing up to hard use very well.

Hi Brian, i have 2 Trojan 115 ah TMX 27 batteries, one in the tray of the Navara and the other in the camper trailer. I run a 110lt waeco from the Navara and it lasted just of 3 days without running the car.

That is the only time it has run out of juice, i run 3 flouro lights, dvd player etc from trailer and it has never gone flat, my longest stay without charging the trailer battery was 5 days, 4 nights.

cheers,
Lance

Pay the money and buy an AGM it will charge to a fuller state quicker and last longer. I've had Trogans and they are not half as good as an AGM. AGM's are maintenance free will charge up almost to a full charge from a cars charging system 14.2 volts compared to a flooded cell. It is also able to take a greater charge current and discharge current than a flooded cell.

I have an Opposite Lock battery box, which will hold the largest N70 size battery.

My problem in the past, was once I drained the battery down, it never went well after that, it lost its long term power

I recommend that you bring the battery back up to full charge after every trip using a smart charger.

My recommendation is to fit an AGM to the box.

Don't know if it will fit in your box, but Whitworths's have the Remco 100 AH AGM for $339. A reasonable price for an AGM battery.
Whitworths AGM battery
I exclusevly use AGMs these days. Now have 6 of them. 3@120AH in caravan. 1@90AH in engine bay. 1@120AH in rear of vehicle. 1@100AH that I use to run the electric trolling motor in the tinnie.
Great batteries. The Chinese made ones are the best value for your $ and in my experience are good quality. All of mine are made in China (3 different brands) and all have been good so far.

As stated above the best 'type' of battery to use as a storage battery capable of running a fridge etc for long periods is an AGM battery !!

There are many very good reasons for this but possibly the main reason is they will charge much faster than a wetcell battery when charging from an Alternator or Generator.

As to best BRAND :-)
every retailer will tell you the battery he sells is best, because he wants to sell you his battery.

If you look at what the big mobile homes, 5th wheelers and such vehicles are using in their rigs you will get some good clues (if you want a good battery) they don't use cheap batteries, but quality batteries, because they have to warranty them in their rig anywhere in Australia.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I am rapt that they were positive , I was worried that this type thread would be railroaded with opinions and not information.

Is there a middle of thee road with AGM's between the cheapies and the expensive brands, for reliability.

Hint, the more they weigh (relevant to capacity & size) generally indicates they contain more lead, which in turn is a requirement to sustain battery capacity under very heavy use.

The terminal posts often indicate the intended end use, if they are only a round post type lug (normal battery) I would not even consider them as a truly high performance storage battery, they should have a flat surface to bolt cables direct, similar as used by those very expensive batteries :-)

Brian, as I said above, I have 5 AGMs, all made in China.
Three are Fullriver brand. A well known and well regarded brand. Two are Remco - also fairly well known. The other is IEB. I had not heard of it before, but was offered a very good price on it by Derek from ABR (advertiser on this site). Decided to give it a go and have had excellent service from it running the trolling motor in the tinnie.

If you don't want to pay big money for the American brands, Fullriver is a good buy in my opinion. Remco, probably similar. I'm the only person I know with an IEB, so that's 100% positive reports - but not sure if you would accept that as statistically significant and my use of this battery is not typical.
