Just wondering if anyone has tried to load Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) which came out about a week ago. Twice failed for me. What to do?

HI jdwynn, it loaded ok on my computer. You might need to go to the microsoft help site and work through the section on 'what to do if sp3 fails to load'. I have had the sp3 for about 3 weeks. Had a few issues with internet explorer which seemed to go away after upgrading to ie8.Cheers. Doc.

If You have had auto updates enabled you probably dont need it as its just a pack of pervious updates in 1 disc.

It has been around for about 2 months in 1 form or another.

If you have an AMD Athlon processor in your computer, it will cause a problem as the SP3 isn't compatible. (It happened to me)
You need to download a patch to correct this. Try this site:
www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-sp3-amd-stop-0x0000007E.html
I believe there are numerous problems with SP3, do a google search. I have not and probably will not install it.

Suggest you talk to Microsft support. There can be many reasons for this and they appear to be good at guiding you thro it all

Having very successfully run XP with SP2 for some years on a number of computers when SP3 emerged (a few months ago) I decided on the "if it ain't broke don't mend it" strategy.

That strategy was very much on my mind too Mike. But I thought I'll see what other's experiences were.

Gee, not sure why it is I wasn't aware of SP3 till a week ago or so - I'm on automatic updates??

cheers JD

SP3 has been available for quite sometime now.

All of my network computers has had the upgrade without any issues what so ever.

Its a 66MB file so it takes sometime to download ensure your Internet connection is not having hassles with such a large download.

Hi John,
Your right, It's been out for awhile now, I've XP Pro.
Installed it back in February.
I would of though most systems would of updated some time ago.

I haven't had any trouble with it.

From what I understand, Microsoft writes the code that installs SP3 and any problems occur only because this service pack installs an Intel chip driver which replaces the AMD chip driver.
This causes the BSOD and looped booting.

I downloaded and tried to load SP3 on a 5year old Compaq (intel) this weekend. The PC wouldn't reboot and it looked like I was going to loose my 'c' drive which I hadn't backed up.

Fortunately, a friend who is an expert managed to get me back to SP2 and I didn't loose any data.
