Hello there.

After just coming back from a few weeks away, we are disgruntled with our current tow vehicle.

We are dragging a Windsor Rapid, which is possibly overloaded, but, let's say it weighs in at 1800kg.

We are currently using a 1990 Pajero 2.5 TD with Intercooler, which, according to Wikipedia should be producing around 240Nm.

After 2 full engine rebuilds, we still crawl up the hills, smoke like a chimney & have people zoom past us.
We only sit on 80km/h happily, but, when you get down to 2nd & 3rd gear & only 30km/h, there would appear to be something wrong.

So, the question comes down to, should we be looking at a full 4 litre TD, or would a newer generation 3 litre TD, like the 2005 onwards Pajero, be sufficient to get us around, without upsetting every trucky in existance??

With all due respect, I suggest your first action should be to weigh the van. Perhaps all blame is not due to the Paj. Thats
where I would start, anyway, along with a van brake check.

Yes, think the low caravan weight maybe suspect, I took my Camper trailer over a weighbridge and it weighed in at 780Kg.

Mainey . . .

If you like the Mitsubishis then try a 3.2 Common Rail DID Triton.

Excellent tow vehicle. I tow a 2 Tonne Van and it is economical as well.

On the face of it, IMO you should be struggling - a 2.5L TD from that era would have very modest KW figures - add the age of the vehicle and the weight and wind drag of the van and it all points to too much work for the poor beast - the new tech common rail 3.0L units have great figures - we moved from the Jackaroo with 118KW to a 4.2L TD for its 3.5t towing specs - that 150KW mill lope along very nicely towing our HD camper, with little fuss - it'll get more work when we move to our 2t van in about 8 months, but it'll still be happily 'loping' I think, most of the time.

Darian - Yes I agree with that. the old Pajaro was not a powerhouse even without that weight on the rear. My 3ltr Common Rail 120kw Holden Rodeo tows well, so you would be looking at more killer wasps. CHEERS Tony

I used to own one of those beasties. I once put 4 blokes and their luggage in it and it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. On the Cape in 4wd it was flat out getting up creekbanks, not to mention the lack of clearance.
It also had an annoying hbabit of trying to swim in tidal rivers.

Sadly there is a common misconception that , anything with 4x4 and diesel stickers will be an ultimate offroader.

Sort out your van weights ... then look at the vehicle.

Whilst I have been impressed with Pajero ability compared to its engine / construction specs since they arrived in '84 ... they are only a lightweight offroader IMHO. ( factory backed Paris to Dakar runs dont count )

Something to keep in mind ... If you need " x " amount of engine power to do something, then you need " y " amount spare for those unforeseen instances. Its why V8 ford and holden owners never had the problems towing that the 6cyl owners had.
