We are arriving on Fraser Island around Monday week, just after the School holidays and
camping along the eastern beaches. Can anyone tell me if there is a sandfly/midgie problem on the island at this time of the year? We would at least like to be prepared if there is.
Regards,
Ron Millard

Not normally. Most sandflys and midgies are found on the western side. Having said that, make sure you take some Bushmans with you, just in case.

Many many years ago, I camped on the ocean side in the September school holidays.
A westerly wind blew up and all the midges got blown over to the east. My wife had such an allergic reaction, her mouth swelled up and became completely ulcerated.
While it was quiet driving home to
Melbourne she was in agony.
So watch the westerly wind, whichis most common in September/October.

I think the westerlies are more common in july/august. Sept/Oct usually get either N/NE picking up in the afternoon, or a moderate-strong SE. Still a chance of a westerly though, especially early morning.

Ron,
I left there yesterday after 4 great days. A few marsh flies, but they are pretty weak compared to those down south that pack a punch, nothing else to worry about. Windy most of the time, lots of whales.
I suffer if sandflies are around, and always carry strong anti-histamines just in case. Didn't need them.

We just got back yesterday from fraser yesterday after 7 days on the island. We camped on the eastern side and had no midgee or sandflys - just a few march flies.
Oo the second to last day we made the fatal mistake of doing a day trip to moon point on the western side, and whooa - Sandflies and midges galore.
I get a very bad reaction to both these and at last count i have over 150 bite marks all over my legs and arms - despite covering myself in the bushies spray. I feel like a kid with chicken pox.
Easterside was fine, but if you dont like midgees or sandflies stay away from the western beaches like moon point.

We just got back last night from after spending a week on Fraser Island. No sandflies on the eastern side and only one march fly for the whole week. Western side of the island heaps so be prepared if you visit that side.
Did get a sandfly bite on
Rainbow side while we were helping one of our party stuck in the soft sand on the return trip from the barge. The sand was a lot softer on the return compared to the arrival at
Rainbow the week before.
Lots of whales. Second day sitting on the dunes we saw at least 18 - 20 and some of them performing for us. Great. Tailor were on and off but at the end of the week were good. Son who never comes and never fishes caught a 65 cm one where we caught 38 in a 1 hour session.
Inland tracks are soft and in some
places very boggy.
Have a great week, wish I could have had 2 weeks there.
Cheers
Robyn

I understand March flies hatch about 10 days after rain .
From experience they seem attracted by blue or dark clothes.
No known repellant for them.
