I have been called many things but no one has ever intimated that I have a small appendix. The text below is from today's Adelaide Advertiser Letters to the Editor. Someone must have really upset him.

Kings of the road

What is it with some four wheel drive owners? When the certificate of purchase is finalised is there some automatic activation of the "inconsideration gene?

Do the digits that operate indicator lights suddenly shrivel up and become an evolutionary vestige much like the appendix? Or is it true that, once you have encased yourself in a large chunk of urban, metal that you think will protect you no matter what you or any other driver does, it is no longer necessary to tell people which way you are going?

Are we witnessing the development of a new species or just a variation of the same old creature who doesn't give a damn about anyone else?

(name omitted) Morphett Vale.

No skulldug, I do not believe four wheel drivers are at all to blame for failing to indicate their intentions. Like most drivers these days if the indicators are used at all it is to show that the vehicle has changed lanes.
Fear not, it is endemic not to indicate at all -- unless there is a copper close by.

Skulldug,

I read the same article, and I have also responded to the editor.
I am interested to see if they publish my response to this jealous small car driver.

The author of the article did supply his name, but Skulldug didn't provide it.

This person has obviously never driven a 4x4 on the Bruce H'way where it seems it is obligatory for all drivers of all 4 cylinder vehicles to overtake said 4x4 regardles of road conditions or prevailing speed restrictions. This is particularly relevant if the driver of said 4 cyl vehicle is female and under 25 years of age or male and wearing a cap in reverse position while holding right arm as a decoration to the exterior of the drivers door while endeavouring to destroy hearing ability of all within 250m It is also important to note that vehicles driven by above described beings will inevitably have indicators which only operate with single flash two seconds after lane change has been completed.

The situation becomes much more imperative if the 4x4 is actually towing a caravan or trailer when it in then important to see how quickly one can fill the space adjacent to the front of the 4x4 ensuring that the driver of the 4x4 must immediately complete an mergency brakeing test. This cutting in action will also ensure that the driver of the 4x4 gets sufficient heart and muscle exercise. This manouver can also ensure that both 4x4 and caravan/trailer are promptly removed from the traffic flow on a pernantent basis. Such action will provide stimulation of nervous system in excess of that obtained through Saturday night use of recreational substances.

I also disagree with the the final comment in the article concerning 'same old creature' in as much as it matters little about age when the entire population doesn't give a damn about anyone else. Walking through the Mall in Brisbane can be Life threatening when the bell goes for go home time. It is a case of "Stand aside or lose a limb"

Ok so I've got a problem with todays behaviour of all ages.

Well it was a BMW that pulled out from the bicycle lane yesterday that almost totalled me, me wearing bright orange flouro shirt, and with flashing multiple LED lights etc and not goin too fast. And of course if he'd used indicators I probably would have had less of a very close shave.

So no, it's everyone.

Did you not know that BMW drivers are licenced to do what they like where they like when they like.

Seems like that in our area anyway.

I drive large buses and these drivers seem to be amongst the worst for passing (along with the above mentioned types) when not advisable, speeding and in general being contempuous of other road users.

My biggest gripe is when I leave a gap to allow me braking space if one of the loonies in front of me does something stupid, I find it full of cars in record time.
Most annoying as I end up further back in the line than when I started.

>Do BMWs count as 4x4s?

About one year ago I had the privilege of witnessing, what I believe may have been a unique event, a BMW X5 offroad! Honest!

It was up in the high High Country and I was camped next to a deepish creek crossing for one night en route to somewhere else. Shortly before I packed up camp in the morning two vehicles approached the creek from the far side and slowly crossed. I intended to take a picture but, as you will understand, was in mild shock at seeing the BMW actually performing an off road function and forgot to take the camera with me as I wondered over to chat. I commented to the BMW driver this was the first time I had ever seen one offroad - he was not amused, in fact he didn't even smile, I suspect he may have been German :)

So Scruby is in Morphett Vale these days eh?

Well, mr name omitted of Morphett Vale. Build a bridge and jump off it.

Its actually a cane-toad thing LOL
Amber light means next 4 cars can go through
Red Light means next 2 cars can squeak through
Indicators optional anytime relevant or not.

I am terrified when I visit my mum on the Gold Coast but then most of ttose drivers are Mexican ex-pats aren't they LOL...
Its like they check their brain at the border...

Hi all.
My wife drives our Patrol, with 4 inch lift kit and 33 BFG mudders as her town car. It is not to make her feel indestructable or bully other drivers. It is purely because I drive a work ute which can't fit our family in or take us into the wild yonders of outback and beyond.
We use this car for a dual purpose as we can't afford a "town" car as well.
If a Toyota yaris could pull a camper through the Simpson we wouldn't need a patrol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When will the small minded left wing whining minority get a grip on reality????
We drive these cars to get us from A to B "off road".
I may be stupid, but I actually thought this is why they make "off road" vehicles. I have no need for a combine harvester so I don't have one. However I don't whinge about those that do.........

I don't think it matters what car some morons drive, they are still going to drive like morons. Until a human breeding license is introduced or humans choose to breed selectively, instead of with anything that will lie down long enough, we will continue to have to deal with morons. Just get over it.

To those morons who have nothing better to do than whinge because a 4WD cut them up, I say that if your life is that meaningless, climb into a pine box and wait!!!
Why don't they read a forum like this one and see what 4wd'ers are really about???

Beats me why the papers publish crap like that in the first place. For sensationalism I suspect.

I don't think it matters what kind of car you drive, if you're a sh*t driver you're a sh*t driver. Simple as that. I had a BMW, 3 4x4's, and various other cars. All had indicators in good working order.

Besides, it's appendage, not appendix, Name Omitted of Morphett Vale.

I don't need a 4x4 to have a small appendage!

Skull, I was not criticsiing you. I was merely commenting on the fact that Australia now seems to have the most inconsiderate drivers and the worst mannered.
Just last week I was driving in Perth when a suited mddle-aged man in new Fairlane cut three lanes across and turned left without using his indicator. He had, I suppose, what could be a valid reason. He was chatting on his yuppie phone.

Everywhere you go people say THEY have the worst drivers. Personally I don't think we are any better or any worse that anywhere else.

As they say, 1% of the population will blatantly do the wrong thing on a continual basis. Fact of life unfortunately. Mind you, some people do think they are above the rules.

It's a lot more than 1% in WA Louise. Try about 90% and you'd be getting there and they really are awful drivers.
Spotted recently on the Mitchell Freeway, man in Fairlane, might have been the same one Brian said about, sitting sort of sideways in the driving seat chatting away to his passengers, right elbow on the top of the steering wheel controlling the vehicle.... must have had his cruise control on and letting the thing drive itself!!
Drivers crossing 2 and 3 lanes to turn left are by no means uncommon and I've even seen the cops do exactly the same thing without their pretty lights going.
Luckily I don't drive for a living these days or I'd have less hair than I've got now.
Happy motoring.
Alan.

We have two smaller cars...Elantra and a Tiburon(wife's) and when we go through intersections and roundabouts...we are fair game to all....BUT when we are in the TROOPY and go through the same there is a big smile on our dials because you should see them all brake hard and back off....when they see that bull bar they suddenly dont feel so invincible.... : )))

It's an opinion, not a very accurate one, but one none-the-less. People can believe what they want, "who is the worst drivers of the lot" etc, but at the end of the day it doesnt really matter. It is designed to make people react like above and defend their actions and/or lay blame elsewhere (with other types of vehicles etc). They have had their 5 seconds of feeling good...let it go i say.

Move on...nothing to see here. :-)
