Looking at dash mounted 2.5 and or 3.5 inch tft rear view monitors for my 4b as rear vison is somewhat restricted due to rear headrests, cargo barrier and tailgate mounted spare etc.
From anyone with one, is this size too small for squinty old eyes, or do you get a reasonale view? The 7" ones are a bit more difficult to find room to place.

Yes I think they may be a bit small. I got a good 7" (REAR VIEW CAMERA!!!) one with sensors off EBAY. the screen fits over the rear view mirror which is great and out of the way. It was quite cheep and still works well, sensors are real handy. I would go that way again. Cheers Tony

Screen with sensors and camera. Shows picture and shows distance away once you get to >1500mm. Also sounds warning buzzer at different beeps as you get closer. Well worth it. Cheers Tony

The rear view mirror ones are not good in daylight as they are in fact a mirror after all and they tend not to be bright enough to overcome the glare in daylight.

Some may have success with them but I have one and have gone back to a 3 1/2 in screen.
I have dark tint on my rear windows and even that is not enough on bright days to overcome the problem.
You arent going fast and I am not young and can see clearly in the small screen to back up to the towball on the van.
The ones with IR also dont work as well in daylight as a plain camera. Tried one of them, an expensive brand and it washed out to beige whereas a Mini cam from this guy

works pefectly
He may substitute cameras with one of his small screens He is good to deal with.

DONT BUY A WIIRELESS SYSTEM

Yes I have one of his on the van and a Polaris MB 35 screen and minicam on the Croozer. Bought his one cos extra Polaris eqiv was $170.

It has slightly different connectors but u can buy adapters from Jaycar. Van camera is powerd off light shown below it so u have to travel with sidelights on Video cable goes down side sealing and up thru Chassis rail to car
Pics below The bigger screen is for navigation from my laptop with Copilot on it

The cover on the vancam is a piece of 40mm polypipe and is there because it keeps the lens out of the sun and stops flaring on the screen.

The wire for the croozer cam is run back thru the wiring loom from the tailgate to the interior of the car

Its a tight fit but a bit of baby oil and it slides thru OK

They are wired into both the reverse circuit and also thru a switch on the console so I can have either or both going all the time.

Got a couple of heated seat switches out of a Sahara that fit in the blanks behind the shift lever and used those

Hope this all helps.

That would be Ok if its not a WIRELESS model and I think it is.

Been there done that and it didnt work.

Too much metal between camera and screen doesnt work to well.

Take camera into line of sight of receiver and its good, put it at other end of car on number plate (like that one) and performance is patchy to say the least

I bought one of those reversing sets from DSE for less than $200.00 made by Swann. The screen is monochrome green as is a cathode ray tube. It is a large unit to have on your dashboard but it does the job and is removed when not in use. I may upgrade later. I have also had the 2 1/2" LCD ones and found that they were very unreliable.

Strange my Polaris is two years old and has never given a moments trouble Has be reinstalled twice now but works fine.

The Swann camera with IR night vision I bought for $129 was absolute crap as I said in above post.
Took it back and bought the one off Ebay and its 100% better.

Dear Mav
My Prado has two screens, 1 Waeco for the caravan about 7 ins with both daylight and infa red for night, no trouble any time best picture fitted on a bracket with a suction cap ( for a moble phone).
The other is for the back of the car mounted near the number plate. screen mounted under the left sun visor, nearly useless both daylight and almost completely useless at night unless there is a search light outback.
Pay the extra and get a Waeco about $500.
Regards
Ted

I have Polaris on both Cruiser and Van with 3.5 monitor on left sunvisor. Has always worked fine day and night; however we were told by the NSW constabulary last weekend during the ACC seminar that it is" illegal to have a screen showing when driving forwards"!!
It is classed as a TV monitor and you can and will be booked.
Did not go down too well with many of us pulling big vans and wanting a good view behind us.

Cheers Mac

"It is classed as a TV monitor and you can and will be booked."

It can only be a TV monitor if it can receive TV or show DVD's etc.

Had this discussion with RTA person as mine has three settings. PC, Video and TV.

PC is for the satnav. Video is for the reverse camera. The TV could recieve TV if it had an aerial attached, it doesn't and when selected shows a black screen and goes into sleep mode. So therefore it is not a TV monitor and the NSW constabulary are full of it as usual.
